Purchasing Pharmacy Technician Position
Purchasing Technician will be under the authority of the Dispensing Manager, Director of Pharmacy, and the VP of Pharmacy.
The following is a guideline of what is expected and the responsibilities included in the Purchasing Technician position.
Position Summary
The Purchasing Pharmacy Technician is responsible for the pharmacy purchasing and inventory management.
Job Responsibilities
- Utilize inventory control programs and policies to achieve targeted inventory levels and turns.
- Recommend product selection, addition and/or elimination based on contracts, availability, usage, and/or formulary management/clinical initiatives.
- Recognize product trends and adjust inventory levels accordingly.
- Ensure the uninterrupted flow of products to assigned pharmacy locations through appropriate purchasing procedures.
- Review the inventory and purchasing needs on a daily basis.
- Coordinate resolution of all inventory order problems (i.e. back orders, manufacturer outs).
- Meet with wholesalers, vendors, and reverse distributors when necessary.
- Communicate with Director of Pharmacy when determining purchasing outside of routine ordering (i.e. shortage, rebate, dating).
- Prepare, participate in and monitor accuracy of all scheduled pharmacy inventories.
- Periodically coordinate review of inventory for expired, damaged, or overstocked medications.
- Process all recall notices:
- Coordinate removal of product from shelves
- Retrieve notices from patients
- Separate notices for proper return, and
- Order replacement/alternate products as indicated
- Mail in 222 forms to DEA
- Sign for receipt of all controlled substance orders using the power of attorney
- Notify staff about outages or NDC changes
- Automation formulary creation based on usage
- Assist or manage canister creation or maintenance, ATP rebalancing
- Minimize pharmaceutical outs that would cause delay in therapy through use of walking the shelves and reports and tools developed to help
- Follow all applicable government regulations including HIPAA
- Other duties as assigned; Job duties may vary by location
Knowledge, Skill and Ability Requirements
1. License
- Maintains current Pharmacy Technician license by the State of Indiana
2. Education
- High School Graduate
3. Language Skills
- Ability to speak English
- Read and interpret documents
- Speak effectively with co-workers and customers
4. Mathematical Skills
- Demonstrate the ability to perform the arithmetic calculations required for usual dosage determinations

- Proficient with Keyboarding/Typing
- Data Base Software
- Ordering Process systems

- Internet Software
6. Interpersonal Communication
- Ability to communicate information with peers and customers
- Maintain and achieve sound business relationships
Mental, Physical, and Work Environment Requirements
The Purchasing Technician completes the assigned position in the pharmacy/dispensing area. The position may have to sit, stand, stoop, bend and walk intermittently throughout his/her shift. Technician may need to sit or stand for eight (8) to ten (10) hours per day. Occasional periods of standing and walking with continuous use of hands and fingers, reaching with hands and arms movements. Close vision activity required with the ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus. The overall work environment has moderate noise (i.e. co-worker conversation, use of office equipment). Based on the Pharmacy needs, may be necessary to work extended hours as needed. Must be able to regularly lift 25 lbs and occasionally lift up to 75 lbs.
