Position Summary

The RN will work under the direction of a licensed physician or certified nurse midwife credentialed at Crossing Rivers Health to provide evidence-based nursing care specific to the childbearing woman, newborn infants, and families. The RN provides direct nursing care as well as coordinates the planning and implementation of comprehensive admission to post-discharge. The RN uses excellent communication skills with the patient to provide comprehensive teaching and promote effective coping behaviors. In collaboration with other healthcare team members, the RN manages nursing care of patient in order to provide high-quality, safe, cost-effective services from admission to post-discharge.

Essential Functions Statement(s)

  • Maintain compliance with organizational and departmental policies, procedures, and processes.
  • Assists in the orientation, training, and development of new nursing personnel and students.
  • Demonstrates willingness to support staffing/scheduling needs of patients and the organization.
  • Participates in and demonstrates active participation in organizational and departmental educational opportunities and staff meetings.
  • Maintains confidentiality of information regarding patients, families, healthcare personnel, and the organization.
  • Provide direct care for the maternal/newborn patient in reference to common, well-defined and complex interactive nursing diagnoses.
  • Completes initial evaluation and admission assessment of patients in labor and newborns to nursery.
  • Mutually establishes goals with the patient, family, and/or significant others, by which to resolve the nursing diagnoses, and develop a comprehensive nursing plan of care from admission to post-discharge from the agency.
  • Collaborates with other health team members to promote the comprehensive nursing plan of care, including health promotion, through provision of direct care, delegation, and collaboration with other healthcare team members.
  • The Registered Nurse manages nursing care of maternal/newborn patients by prioritizing, planning, and organizing the delivery of comprehensive nursing care by using time, personnel, and material resources effectively and efficiently.
  • Maintains accountability for nursing care delivered directly and for aspects of care delegated to others.
  • Assures adherence to ethical and legal standards of the organization and profession.
  • Initiates and promotes referral to appropriate healthcare departments and nursing agencies to provide continuity of care, assists with transfer of patients while following EMTALA regulations as needed.
  • Ensures safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff and follows appropriate safety practices.
  • Participates in quality review and performance improvement projects.
  • Performs technical skills safely and according to current policies and procedures demonstrating a working knowledge of equipment.
  • Evaluates conditions of mother and fetus during labor process and interprets fetal monitoring accurately.
  • Identifies any maternal or newborn pathological changes or complication, and informs the obstetrical provider as necessary.
  • Performs emergency procedures such as resuscitation as necessary.
  • Educates patient and family on labor, post-partum, and newborn care.
  • Participates in and maintains required competencies.
  • Participates in the performance appraisal process.
  • Maintains current RN licensure.
  • Fosters a culture of positivity and trust within the department and across the organization.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned to meet the needs of patients, the department and the organization as a whole.

Requirements:

Education

  • Associate’s Degree Required. Field of Study: Nursing
  • Bachelor’s Degree Preferred. Field of Study: Nursing

Computer Skills

  • Basic Computer Proficiency

Other Requirements

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license and able to practice in the State of Wisconsin.
  • Certified BLS (Basic Life Support) and ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Provider) within 6 months of hire
  • Beginning Fetal Monitoring within 6 months of hire
  • Water Birth Certification within 6 months of hire
  • ALSO (Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics) and Intermediate Fetal Monitoring encouraged.
