Job Title: Converting Manager – Folding Carton
Role Summary
A Converting Manager in a folding carton company leads the production and finishing teams. They ensure printed flat paperboard sheets are smoothly cut, folded, glued, and packed into perfect retail packaging boxes. This role demands strong leadership, technical knowledge of equipment (like die-cutters and folder-gluers), and strict quality control. The Converting Manager will report directly to the Plant Manager
Key Responsibilities
• Lead the Team: Manage, train, and schedule machine operators and assistants for die-cutting, windowing, and folder-gluer departments.
• Control Quality: Enforce strict quality checks to ensure all cartons fold properly, glue securely, and meet customer specifications.
• Optimize Machines: Monitor equipment performance to reduce setup times, minimize paper waste, and maximize daily output.
• Drive Safety: Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment by enforcing OSHA guidelines and plant safety protocols.
• Manage Workflow: Coordinate with the printing and shipping departments to make sure orders are completed on time.
• Troubleshoot: Quickly identify equipment or material issues (e.g., warped board, bad glue) and guide your team through corrective actions.
Other Responsibilities
• Read and comprehend the schedule to determine the sequence of production.
• Interpret job order specification sheet to determine needs for gluing.
• Review and verify the pre-print label information is correct prior to use.
• Ability to review and interpret the production map
• Perform proper procedure in performing a line purge.
• Make ready and set up the gluer in accordance to job order specification.
• Setup for specialty gluing applications using glue extrusion systems
• Ensure proper case packing is correct to job specification and fit for end use.
• Set up and operate the Tamarack inline window machine on Speed King and OMEGA 110
• Set up and utilize the detection systems
• Verify glued cartons meet job requirements
• Run production to optimize throughput
• Perform and document quality audits of production to ensure quality, adjust gluer as necessary
• Complete paperwork for production tracking
• Diagnoses and troubleshooting mechanical gluer issues.
• Ability to direct crew
• Use a hand truck to move cut loads to gluer
Qualifications & Skills
• Experience: 3-5+ years of production management experience in the folding carton or packaging industry.
• Technical Skills: Strong understanding of bindery/converting equipment like Bobst die-cutters and folder-gluers.
• Leadership: Ability to motivate staff, resolve conflicts, and promote a team-oriented culture.
• Computer Skills: Basic proficiency in ERP systems and Microsoft Office.
