OBJECTIVE SUMMARY:
Responsible for providing comprehensive skilled pediatric Occupational Therapy evaluation and treatment of infants, children, and adolescents in an outpatient setting, consistent with AOTA, State, District, and departmental standards.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
This role will see pediatric patients in the outpatient setting.
- Assess the patient’s Occupational Therapy needs.
- Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and participation skills including feeding, dressing, grooming, toileting, play skills, school-related tasks, and age-appropriate self-care routines.
- Perceptual and sensory processing skills including visual-perceptual skills, eye-hand coordination, position in space, sensory modulation and integration (touch/sensation, proprioception, vestibular processing), stereognosis, tactile discrimination, body awareness, body image, left/right discrimination, and visual attention impacting fine and gross motor performance.
- Physical and motor skills including range of motion, muscle strength, postural control, balance, bilateral coordination, fine motor skills, grasp and release, in-hand manipulation, handwriting readiness, and functional mobility as it relates to age-appropriate play, school participation, and self-care.
- Cognitive, developmental, and executive functioning abilities including attention, concentration, problem-solving, planning, sequencing, emotional regulation, and ability to follow directions within structured and unstructured environments.
- Assess need for adaptive equipment, assistive devices, and environmental modifications in the home, school, and community settings to support participation, safety, and independence.
- Assess need for corrective and/or preventative splinting, positioning devices, and orthotic interventions appropriate for pediatric populations.
- Evaluate the pediatric patient’s condition, developmental level, family dynamics, caregiver support, and home/school environment to determine available assistance and identify additional services or community resources needed to support the child’s functional outcomes.
- Develop an individualized therapy plan:
- Utilize assessment data to develop a pediatric plan of care using a problem-oriented record format; develop a written family education and home program plan, including goals, objectives, and methods of teaching, adjusted to the child’s developmental level and family’s learning needs.
- Interpret Rehabilitation Department/Occupational Therapy services as the child and family are actively involved in development of the plan of care.
- Consult with appropriate disciplines (e.g., physical therapy, speech therapy, physicians, educators, social work) and incorporate interdisciplinary input to develop and implement the plan of care.
- Additional responsibilities:
- Consult the physician and obtain consent to proceed with the assessed pediatric treatment plan.
- Assure implementation of the therapy plan:
- Provide skilled pediatric Occupational Therapy services at the frequency required to meet established goals, as follows:
- Provide OT services and treatment requiring specialized pediatric skill and ordered by the physician.
- Instruct and educate caregivers, family members, and staff in therapeutic activities, positioning, sensory strategies, adaptive equipment use, and carryover techniques.
- Instruct, supervise, and counsel caregivers and staff to support continuity of care across settings including home, school, and community environments.
- Administer planned and informal learning experiences for the pediatric patient, delegating appropriate reinforcement activities to caregivers and other team members.
- Provide skilled pediatric Occupational Therapy services at the frequency required to meet established goals, as follows:
- Maintain responsibility for care given by Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants:
- Develop the pediatric plan of care to be implemented by the COTA.
- Provide specific verbal and written instructions to the COTA prior to the COTA’s first visit, including demonstrations as needed.
- Supervise the COTA as required, including at least monthly supervision with general and specific discussion regarding treatment implementation and patient performance; review all OT documentation completed by the COTA and provide guidance for plan modifications as needed.
- Periodically observe the COTA’s performance and re-evaluate the pediatric patient’s functional status as appropriate.
- Perform skilled services that the COTA may not be qualified to perform (e.g., evaluations, re-evaluations, complex clinical decision-making).

REQUIRED EDUCATION:
Graduate of an Occupational Therapy School approved by the Council of Medical Education of the AMA in collaboration with the American Occupational Therapy Association or its equivalent

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
Completion of all clinical internships
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
Prefer minimum of one year experience in pediatric occupational therapy in inpatient, outpatient, school-based, or pediatric clinic settings
ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS:
Successful completion of national registration exam and license to practice in the State of Washington
SKILLS:
- Ability to apply pediatric therapy skills and techniques.
- Demonstrates maturity and professionalism in representing the Rehabilitation Services department.
- Ability to work collaboratively with children, families, caregivers, educators, healthcare providers, and the public.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Hospital inpatient and outpatient pediatric therapy environments. Potential exposure to infectious diseases. Potential need to function in medical emergencies and incidents. Community and school-based outreach as applicable.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. with proper technique. Lifting, carrying, and positioning pediatric patients and equipment. Frequent floor-based activities, kneeling, bending, and transitioning between positions. Ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently and work with children and families experiencing stress or emotional challenges related to developmental or medical conditions.

Eligibility Requirements - Employees regularly scheduled at least 20 hours per week.
