Join our growing team as a Grading Superintendent, where you will be responsible for overseeing all aspects grading on a construction site, including managing crews, ensuring safety compliance, interpreting project plans, coordinating equipment, and maintaining quality control to achieve project deadlines and specifications, while reporting directly to the Grading Manager and Project Manager; essentially leading all field operations related to earthwork and site preparation.


Position Description

Position Summary

The Grading Superintendent is responsible for overseeing all field operations related to earthwork, mass grading, and site development projects. This role leads field crews, coordinates equipment and materials, and ensures projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with contract documents and company standards.

The Superintendent serves as the primary on-site leader and is accountable for production, quality, and safety performance across multiple grading crews.

Key Responsibilities

Field Operations & Project Execution

  1. Plan, coordinate, and supervise all grading activities including clearing, excavation, embankment, and fine grading
  2. Manage daily jobsite operations, sequencing, and production goals for multiple crews
  3. Interpret construction drawings, grading plans, cut/fill maps, and specifications to direct work
  4. Ensure projects are built in accordance with plans, specifications, and client requirements
  5. Coordinate subcontractors, inspectors, and suppliers to maintain workflow and prevent delays

Leadership & Team Management

  1. Lead, mentor, and develop foremen, operators, and labor crews
  2. Conduct daily huddles, weekly production meetings, and safety briefings
  3. Establish clear expectations for productivity, quality, and safety
  4. Promote a strong team culture aligned with company values

Scheduling, Production & Cost Control

  1. Develop short-term schedules and adjust daily plans to meet project milestones
  2. Monitor production rates, quantities, and job costs (yards moved, haul cycles, etc.)
  3. Coordinate manpower, equipment, and materials to maximize efficiency
  4. Track and report daily progress, delays, and field issues

Grade Control & Technical Oversight

  1. Oversee grade checking, staking, and layout using GPS, lasers, and survey data
  2. Ensure proper elevations, slopes, drainage, and compaction requirements are achieved
  3. Utilize machine control technology to improve accuracy and efficiency
  4. Verify quantities and assist with cut/fill balancing

Safety & Compliance

  1. Enforce company safety policies and OSHA standards on all job sites
  2. Conduct toolbox talks, safety inspections, and incident reporting
  3. Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations
  4. Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work environment

Communication & Coordination

  1. Work closely with Project Managers, General Superintendents, and engineers
  2. Communicate effectively with clients, inspectors, and stakeholders
  3. Resolve field conflicts, design issues, and logistical challenges
  4. Maintain accurate daily reports, documentation, and logs

Position Requirements

Qualifications

Experience

  1. 7–10+ years of heavy civil construction experience (grading, excavation, sitework)
  2. 3+ years in a superintendent or senior foreman role
  3. Proven experience managing mass grading and high-production earthwork operations

Skills & Knowledge

  1. Strong understanding of grading operations, earthwork production, and equipment capabilities
  2. Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and survey/layout data
  3. Experience with GPS machine control and grade checking equipment preferred
  4. Knowledge of scheduling, sequencing, and cost control practices
  5. Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills

Certifications (Preferred)

  1. OSHA 30
  2. CPR/First Aid
  3. Valid driver’s license

Physical Requirements

  1. Work involves sitting, walking or standing for extended periods of time in various adverse weather conditions
  2. Must be able to repeatedly lift and/or carry weights of five to fifty pounds
  3. Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information
  4. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination
  5. Numerical Aptitude- This position requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; adding and subtracting totals; multiplying and dividing.
  6. Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment, safety glasses, hard hat with chin strap, reflective safety vest, gloves, ear protection, face shield, safety toe boots
