Environmental Health Specialist
Location – 41 Research Dr. Hampton, VA 23666
Employment Type – Full-Time
Work Schedule – (4) 10-hour work schedule, Monday – Thursday

The Environmental Health Specialist is responsible for ensuring compliance with all environmental, health, and safety regulations across manufacturing operations. This role supports a culture of safety, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement by identifying risks, implementing controls, and ensuring adherence to federal, state, and contract specific requirements. The position requires a proactive, detail-oriented professional with experience in industrial or military environments.

Job Description:

The Environmental Health Specialist serves as a key contributor in maintaining a safe and compliant workplace within a high demand manufacturing environment supporting the defense industry. This role is responsible for developing, implementing, and enforcing environmental health and safety programs in alignment with OSHA, VOSH, VADEQ and applicable DoD standards. The specialist will partner with leadership to mitigate risk, drive compliance, and promote a culture of accountability and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, local, and contract specific environmental and safety regulations
  • Conduct routine inspections, audits, and risk assessments across manufacturing operations
  • Develop, implement, and maintain EHS policies, procedures, and training programs
  • Lead incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action implementation
  • Monitor and manage hazardous materials handling, storage, and disposal in accordance with regulatory requirements
  • Maintain required documentation, permits, and reporting related to environmental compliance
  • Support regulatory inspections and interface with external agencies as required
  • Provide guidance and training to employees and leadership on safety practices and compliance expectations
  • Track and analyze safety metrics to identify trends and drive continuous improvement initiatives
  • Partner with operations leadership to ensure safe work practices are integrated into daily activities

Qualifications & Skills

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience in environmental health and safety within a manufacturing or military environment
  • Working knowledge of OSHA, VADEQ, and applicable environmental regulations
  • Experience conducting audits, inspections, and incident investigations
  • Strong understanding of hazard recognition and risk mitigation strategies
  • Willing to train and obtain OSHA 500/501 certification

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting defense contractors or working within OSHA 500 and 501 standards
  • OSHA 500/501 certification

Skills:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to enforce compliance while maintaining professional working relationships
  • High attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment

Employment Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be authorized to work in the United States
  • Ability to obtain and maintain any required security clearances as applicable
  • Successful completion of pre-employment screening requirements

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to walk, stand, and move throughout manufacturing facilities for extended periods
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds as needed
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)

Work Environment:

This position operates within a manufacturing environment that may include exposure to noise, machinery, and varying temperatures. The role requires adherence to strict safety protocols and use of appropriate PPE at all times.
