About This Position
Job Summary: Under the general supervision of the Utilities Foreman, the Utilities Technician I is responsible for entry level performance of a variety of manual tasks following simple routines during City services and the construction, repair, and maintenance of City facilities, answering service calls and servicing equipment as required.
Education/Training/Experience Requirements: 1. High school diploma or equivalent. 2. Ability to obtain Class “C” Water Distribution or Wastewater Collection II license or higher within 30 months of hire or promotion date. Training is provided. 3. Utility experience is preferred. 4. Class “C” Texas driver’s license. Essential Job Functions: 1. Operates various types of medium and heavy-duty construction equipment. 2. Performs a variety of maintenance work. 3. Required to carry a cell phone provided by the city for a seven-day period when on call. 4. Digs and backfills trenches. 5. Repairs and installs water sewer lines. 6. Reads residential, commercial, and industrial water meters on an assigned route and records those readings. 7. Inspects meters to determine if they are functioning properly, reports any defective meters to a supervisor and replaces dials and broken meter glass. 8. Repairs minor leaks in the meter box and replaces meters when necessary. 9. Turns service water on and off as required and records appropriate readings. 10. Builds manholes, cleans and unstops manholes and sewer lines, and patches holes in streets and driveways. 11. Install street and traffic signs. 12. Operates power tools such as saws, jackhammers, spray paint guns, mowers and edgers, and air tools. 13. Services vehicles and equipment. 14. Moves and/or drives vehicles and equipment if needed. 15. Answers calls for service, checks leaks, and prepares necessary records and reports. 16. Obtains bacteriological samples. 17. Performs other related duties as assigned. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 1. Knowledge and skills in the use of standard equipment and hand tools. 2. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. 3. Ability to read and record figures accurately. 4. Willing and capable of training and learning new skills. Physical Demands/Work Environment: Lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds; pulling, pushing or dragging up to 150 pounds of repair equipment and materials; climbing, crawling, kneeling, squatting, stooping and bending freely when participating in repairs; sitting, standing or walking for extended periods of time; working indoors and outdoors in extreme temperatures including heat, cold, temperature swings and inclement weather; and some exposure to mechanical, electrical and explosive hazards dust, using proper safety precautions. May work in tight and enclosed areas. May be exposed to high noise levels. .Work is ordinarily repetitive, but once learned can be performed under general, rather than close supervision. Work is reviewed by superiors during process and upon completion.
