What is a Materials Manager?
The Materials Manager is responsible for overseeing materials planning, inventory management, procurement coordination, and material flow to support efficient manufacturing operations. This role ensures that raw materials and supplies are available to meet production demands while optimizing inventory levels and minimizing costs. The position plays a critical role in aligning supply with demand, improving inventory accuracy, and supporting overall operational performance.
What You Can Expect to Do as a Materials Manager:
- Oversee materials planning, inventory control, and material flow within the facility
- Ensure availability of raw materials and supplies to meet production schedules
- Manage inventory levels to balance service, cost, and efficiency
- Coordinate with Procurement, Production, and Supply Chain teams
- Monitor and improve inventory accuracy and control processes
- Develop and maintain material planning strategies and policies
- Analyze demand, usage, and trends to support planning decisions
- Manage warehouse coordination and material handling processes
- Identify and implement improvements to reduce waste and optimize inventory
- Lead and develop materials and inventory team members
What We Are Looking For in a Materials Manager:
- Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Operations, Business, or related field preferred
- 5–8+ years of experience in materials management, inventory control, or supply chain roles
- Experience in manufacturing or industrial environments preferred
- Strong understanding of inventory management, planning, and material flow
- Experience with ERP systems and inventory tracking tools
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication and leadership abilities
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and drive process improvements
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
