SSA Marine is seeking an Assistant Superintendent to join our North Island team. This full-time, permanent position is based at our office on North Island and reports to the General Manager.
The Position
The Assistant Superintendent works within the North Island business unit to support all day-to-day activities in the form of labour & foreperson dispatch, payroll, gear locker & vessel supervision, procurement, equipment maintenance and safety compliance and initiatives.
You will be part of a motivated and diverse team and will have a high degree of interaction with all employees throughout the organization.
Responsibilities & Activities
Manage labour dispatch and allocation for forepersons in accordance with Collective Agreement timelines, BCMEA guidelines, and coordination with ILWU 508, dispatchers, and management.Coordinate labour orders and foreperson coverage with Supercargo, Log Manager, Victoria management, SSA Marine mainland dispatch, and pool companies, including cruise and mainland support.Maintain continuous communication and email monitoring for vessel movement line calls at Nanaimo Assembly Wharf, Crofton, and Island Terminals.Oversee timekeeping by ensuring accurate and timely entry of vessel, dock, and gear locker payroll; resolve discrepancies with dispatchers, Supercargoes, and management.Maintain foreperson records including chargeable hours, job refusals, leave tracking, payroll guarantees, and publish weekly schedules and reports.Direct and supervise auto, log, vessel, and gear locker operations, ensuring safety, efficiency, and adherence to company policy and regulatory requirements.Provide operational leadership and relief coverage, including Supercargo, Port Captain, Gear Locker oversight, cruise superintendent support, and labour conflict response.Lead health and safety compliance through inspections, investigations, safety observations, JHSC participation, confined space compliance, and visible leadership.Support company and SSA initiatives, conduct safety blitzes, and ensure consistent enforcement of EHS policies and procedures.Handle administrative and miscellaneous duties including travel coordination, procurement, event planning, sub‑tenant relations, and preparing discipline documentation.Qualifications & Skills
The role requires a minimum high school diploma, with related post‑secondary education preferred, and prior experience working in a unionized environment considered a strong asset. Candidates must possess a thorough understanding of the Longshore and Forepersons Collective Agreements, including the Black Book Agreement, as well as a solid grasp of Foreperson Dispatch Guidelines. A strong working knowledge of company safe operating procedures for handled commodities is essential to ensure safe and efficient operations. In addition, candidates must demonstrate a solid understanding of MOSH, COSH, and Tackle Regulations to support regulatory compliance and workplace safety.
