About This Position

General Description

The Hazardous Waste Coordinator plays a critical role in ensuring the safe, complaint, and efficient handling of hazardous, medical, and chemical waste at NASA Ames Research Center. This position supports ongoing research, development, and medical operations by overseeing the cradle-to-grave management of regulated waste streams. The successful candidate will provide technical expertise in waste segregation, sampling, manifesting, and transport, and serve as a trusted resource to waste generators across the Center. How You Will Fulfill Your Mission

Hazardous and Medical Waste Management

  • Collect hazardous R&D laboratory waste and regulated medical waste from various facilities.
  • Segregate and process waste by hazard class to ensure proper handling and storage.
  • Bulk solvents for flammable liquid and non-RCRA liquid drums.
  • Lab pack hazardous and medical waste in accordance with regulatory standards.

Waste Handling, Transport & Tracking

  • Perform on-site pick-ups, transportation, classification, packaging, and cradle-to-grave tracking of waste containers.
  • Coordinate timely pick-up (3 business days) upon receipt of a completed Form A.
  • Safely transport hazardous and medical waste to designated accumulation or storage facilities using government-provided vehicles.

Sampling & Laboratory Coordination

  • Conduct hazardous waste and PCB wipe sampling; prepare documentation and samples for shipment to a State-certified laboratory.
  • Prepare and maintain sampling records and lab submittals.

Compliance & Documentation

  • Prepare hazardous waste manifests and ensure compliance with federal, state, and NASA regulations.
  • Maintain detailed records including analytical reports, profiles, manifests, and land disposal restriction forms.
  • Conduct weekly compliance inspections of hazardous waste facilities and initial inspections for Satellite Accumulation Areas.
  • Assist in internal audits, regulatory inspections, and annual environmental self-assessments.

Training & Support for Waste Generators

  • Provide guidance on proper labeling, storage, and disposal procedures to hazardous waste generators.
  • Distribute and manage containers for waste storage and coordinate waste pick-up schedules.
  • Prepare monthly generator activity reports detailing location, organization code, waste type, and other key data.

Chemical Exchange and Inventory

  • Manage chemical exchange logistics by transporting unopened, unused chemicals to the Ames Chemical Exchange (ACE) and Central Chemical Storage Facility.
  • Maintain accurate inventory of all exchanged or stored chemicals.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Bulk inorganic acids and bases, entering tracking data into designated systems.
  • Support quarterly inspections of PCB-containing equipment and assist with annual report preparation.
  • Maintain required certifications (e.g., 40-hour HAZWOPER, DOT hazardous materials transportation).
  • Drive individual and organizational success by supporting corporate objectives through tracking key performance metrics, monitoring profit and loss (P&L) outcomes, and contributing to business development initiatives.

Specific Knowledge/Certification Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • A minimum of 8 years of direct experience, including local and state regulatory requirements, related to Regulated and Controlled Waste/Municipal Solid Waste, required.
  • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)
  • DOT Hazardous Materials Certification (40 CFR)
  • HAZWOPER 40-Hour Certification (29 CFR 1910.120)
  • Minimum Bachelor of Science (BS) degree environmental or science/engineering with a minimum of four college-level courses in chemistry.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) and CUPA regulations
  • Experience working on a federal contract.

This position also requires the ability to pass a job-related physical examination and meet medical certification requirements for the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including the ability to wear a respirator. The employee will perform sampling and handling hazardous waste and other regulated materials, which necessitate the use of PPE in accordance with safety and regulatory standards.
  • Work Environment: Work will mainly be performed in an office setting and occasionally with irregular hours.
  • Travel: A low amount of travel away from office may be required.
