About This Position

Position SummaryThis position maintains the condition of City parks and perimeter grounds by ensuring completion of maintenance and repairs to the building, systems, and equipment to maintain safe and comfortable conditions under the general direction of the Parks Maintenance Manager. Essential Functions
  • Trains new employees and coordinates cross-training opportunities. Coaches and mentors staff to meet goals and maintain motivation.
  • Schedules daily work assignments. Reprioritizes assignments as needed. Monitors assigned duties to ensure timely completion of work. Completes time sheets and completes schedule to accommodate approved time off. Prepare documents to record daily work activities.
  • Organizes, leads, and oversees building repairs, property maintenance and cleaning projects; ensures appropriate equipment and supplies are available. Directs and guides other assigned department staff to assist in the completion of the scheduled project accurately and on time.
  • Monitors the outcomes of work performed by other department personnel and contract service providers.
  • Oversees and directs the proper methods and procedures of performing maintenance duties.
  • Routinely inspects facilities, parks, athletic fields, and recreation equipment to ensure quality and maintenance.
  • Responds to call-ins or project changes and modifies schedule as needed to meet work demands and to fill in for employee absences.
  • Ensures proper care and maintenance of tools and equipment. Coordinates maintenance as needed.
  • Prepares performance evaluations.
  • Receives and investigates accident reports.
  • Responds to customer service inquires, providing appropriate follow-up, referral or resolution.
  • Assists with snow removal operations.
  • Assembles and disassembles equipment for special events.
  • Prepares cost estimates, maintenance, supply requisitions and inventory reports.
  • Provides input to Parks Manager on related bid specifications and budget needs.
  • Performs all duties of the crew as needed.
  • Reports to work for on-call after hours needs, as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of principles, practices and methods of parks maintenance, repair, and construction.
  • Knowledge of principles and techniques of horticulture and grounds maintenance including pesticide and herbicide use.
  • Knowledge of equipment and tools utilized in parks maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions and measures.
  • Knowledge of insect/disease problems of trees and makes recommendations for treatment or removal.
  • Knowledge of ASTM, CPSC and ADA safety regulations and requirements for facility safety.
  • Knowledge of irrigation troubleshooting and repairs.
  • Skill in operating a variety of equipment and machinery related to parks maintenance, grounds maintenance and related.
  • Ability to prioritize duties to accomplish a high volume of work product while adapting to constant changes in priority.
  • Knowledge of City policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision; take responsibility for quality and timeliness of work; respond to unplanned requests; complete assigned tasks and report progress; demonstrate behavior consistent with Department direction.
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor when dealing with the public.
  • Ability to take control of situations in a responsible manner.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Ability to lead other team members.
  • Ability to work the allocated hours of the position and ability to work flexible hours to include evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays due to adverse weather conditions, construction projects, or other emergency service.
Required Education, Experience, Licensing, and Certifications
  • Associates Degree in Recreation, Horticulture, or other related trade preferred with five (5) years of experience working in facility maintenance/construction.
  • Must the following certifications, or obtain within the timeframe specified by the City:
    • State Pesticide certification - Category 3 Turf and Ornamental;
    • Confined Space certification;
    • Playground Safety Inspector certification; and
    • Certification in irrigation installation and repair.
  • Must have a Tennessee Commercial Driver’s License or obtain in the timeframe specified by the City.
  • Tree climbing and rigging certification preferred.
