Position Summary

  • The RNFA/CSTFA works closely, hands-on, with the surgeon to aid in the process of prepping/draping patients for surgery, suturing, hemostasis, clamping, and provides surgical site exposure
  • They will assist in positioning patients to ensure a safe operation, applying dressings and garments, transport to the PACU, and room turnover

Essential Duties/Functions

  • Provides hemostasis, suturing, and wound management
  • Works in collaboration with the surgeon and other healthcare team members to achieve optimal patient outcomes
  • Assist in the development of treatment plans in conjunction with lead surgeon(s)
  • Assist surgeon(s) during the surgery including passing requested instruments, sutures, equipment, and retraction
  • Assist with room turnover by helping to clean the operating room post-operation and set up for the next procedure
  • Account for all tools, instruments, and sharps during the procedure
  • Help with center opening/closing duties if required
  • Help with preparing, cleaning, and sterilizing instruments, equipment, and operating rooms if required
  • Placement of pneumatic tourniquet, urinary catheter placement, placement/suturing of surgical drains
  • Closure of all wound layers (fascia, subcutaneous, and skin)
  • Assist with taking standardized photos if required
  • Ensures adequate inventory of controlled drugs, supplies, instrumentation and equipment are available to meet patient needs
  • Mixing liposuction tumescent bags
  • Assist with unpackaging and restocking inventory
  • Check sharps boxes and change any that are full, empty all linen/biohazard bags, logs, wheeling patients
  • Start and remove IVs if needed
  • Launch in Prean and discharge from PACU when needed if properly trained
  • Complete all mandatory training
  • Follow all state, federal and/or local health and safety rules, laws, and regulations
  • *Additional job duties as assigned.

Education
  • Current Michigan RN license, BSN preferred
  • Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) and/or Certified Surgical Tech First Assist (CSTFA)
  • Must currently be RNFA certified or obtain your RNFA certification within 1 year of employment, CNOR preferred
  • Past experience as a surgeon from another country is a plus
  • Must currently be BLS and ACLS certified or obtain your certifications within 30 days of employment (reimbursement is available)
Experience

Minimum three (3) years of ambulatory surgery clinical experience as a Registered Nurse First Assist (RNFA) or Certified Surgical Tech First Assist (CSTFA)

Interpersonal Skills and Attributes

  • Bilingual English and Spanish is a plus
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality regarding patient health information
  • Ability to focus on patient safety, teamwork, patient outcomes, patient experience and quality improvement
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Strong communication skills: written and verbal and interpersonal
  • Microsoft Office experience
  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Flexible, reliable, patient-oriented, and self-motivated
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action
  • Professional behavior/appearance required
  • Ability to focus on patient safety, teamwork, patient outcomes, patient experience and quality improvement

Physical/Sensory Requirements

  • Ability to be active and on your feet throughout the day
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds (to help assist with patients)
  • Corrected hearing and vision to normal range
  • Full range of motion, manual and finger dexterity, and hand-eye coordination
