About This Position

Job Summary: This position holds responsibility for assisting the Project Superintendent in supervising the total construction effort to ensure that a project is constructed in accordance with design, budget, schedule, and required safety elements. The Assistant Superintendent may be required to take full responsibility on a given project at the request of the General Superintendent. A company vehicle will be provided.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Study construction documents and be responsible for layout of the building.
  • Assist as directed by the Project Superintendent in planning, prioritizing, coordinating, and supervising multiple activities for project, including determining method of construction, manpower levels, material quantities, equipment needs, temporary power sources, and work schedule.
  • Coordinate work with different crafts and sub-contractors, sharing the responsibility for productivity, efficient use of materials and equipment, and contractual performance of the project.
  • Ensure work complies with drawings, specifications and schedule.
  • Maintain a working relationship with owners, architects, and Project Manager.
  • Assist in resolving construction problems (lack of productivity, work interfaces, etc.) as required.
  • Maintain awareness of safety rules and procedures among personnel, as well as identify safety hazards and implementing corrective actions.
  • Maintain cost control and adherence to project budget.
  • Document employees' actual hours worked and submit to HR/Payroll Coordinator each week in the absence of the Superintendent.
  • Perform additional assignments at supervisor's direction.

Knowledge, Experience & Competencies:

  • Minimum of a high school diploma or GED; Bachelor's degree in Construction Management or similar major preferred
  • Must possess a valid, state-issued driver's license
  • Minimum 6 years of work experience in a commercial construction environment, of which 2 years must be at the Foreman level
  • Ability to read, understand, and implement construction documents
  • Ability to calculate correct concrete and lumber quantities for projects
  • Must have basic competencies in mathematics and be able to perform math operations rapidly and accurately
  • Excellent supervisory skills with ability to directly supervise up to 30 employees, as well as sub-contractors
  • Good interpersonal skills with customer-service orientation as well as ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to produce quality work in an efficient manner with little supervision in an ever-changing environment
  • Good computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and internet-based applications
  • Ability to operate basic office equipment including computer, printer, copier, fax, scanner, and mobile phone/radio
  • Ability to operate pickup truck, transit & level, backhoe, scissor lift, boomlift, forklift, skidsteer, and hand tools
  • Current OSHA Construction 10-Hour certification
  • Current basic first aid/CPR certification
  • Must complete Tennessee Drug-Free Workplace Supervisor Training within 6 months of being in position
  • Ability to work Monday through Friday, eight to nine hours per day, five days per week between the hours of 6:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Ability to work Saturdays and Sundays as needed to meet project schedules and demands
  • Ability to be on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for project site emergencies

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • Position directly supervises the positions of Project Foreman, Carpenter, Carpenter Helper, Laborer, Concrete Finisher, Operator, and Job Clerk.

Travel Requirements:

  • Daily travel to various job site locations within 100-mile radius of office
  • Occasional travel to meetings or events within 50-mile radius of office, 4 – 6 times per year
  • Occasional out-of-town assignments

Physical Demands of Job:

  • Ability to work outdoors and indoors without temperature control continuously
  • Ability to exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects without assistance from other personnel or lifting equipment
  • Constant standing, frequent walking, occasional kneeling/squatting/climbing
  • Ability to maintain balance while walking and working on scaffolds and ladders
  • Ability to reach for, grasp, and manipulate construction materials and tools
  • Ability to see well (naturally or with correction)
