Job Description

Opportunity: Morgan Foods, Inc., a premier manufacturer of soups, beans, gravy, and broths, is seeking a Supply Chain Manager in Warehousing to support logistic operations at its Romulus, Michigan distribution center. The Supply Chain Manager – Warehousing provides overall leadership for warehousing, shipping, receiving, inventory control, material handling, and related logistics operations for American Soy Products, including the Barnes Court and Romulus Distribution Center facilities. The position ensures the safe, efficient, accurate, and timely movement, storage, and distribution of materials and finished products in support of manufacturing and customer requirements.

This role leads warehouse management, supervisory, analytical, production, and material-handling personnel; establishes operational priorities and performance expectations; manages staffing, resources, and budgets; and ensures compliance with company policies and applicable safety, quality, food safety, SQF, and regulatory requirements. The position serves as the departmental subject matter expert for SAP warehouse processes and partners with Supply Chain, Production, Quality, Safety, Human Resources, and other functions to achieve operational objectives and drive continuous improvement. This role also requires flexibility to work across facilities and shifts; travel between warehousing locations and respond to operational needs outside normal 8a-5p, Mon-Fri working hours.

  • General Warehouse and Logistics Operations Leadership
  • Operational Leadership and Execution
  • Provide overall leadership for warehouse, shipping, receiving, inventory control, shuttle, transportation, and material-handling operations across all facilities, shifts, and outside storage locations.
  • Ensure the efficient, timely, and accurate movement and storage of raw materials, packaging, supplies, and finished products in support of production schedules and customer requirements.
  • Maintain appropriate staffing, equipment, warehouse capacity, space utilization, management coverage, and operational support to meet business needs.
  • Ensure warehouse facilities are organized, safe, clean, secure, efficient, and maintained to protect employees, products, inventory, equipment, and other company assets.
  • Coordinate operations across departments, facilities, and shifts; resolve operational issues and escalate significant risks or concerns as appropriate.

  • People Leadership and Workforce Development
  • Lead, coach, develop, and hold accountable supervisors, analysts, material handlers, production employees, and other assigned personnel.
  • Establish departmental and individual goals aligned with organizational priorities, operational performance, safety, quality, service, and cost objectives.
  • Monitor employee performance and provide ongoing coaching, feedback, recognition, and formal & informal performance evaluations.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources regarding staffing, selection, attendance, employee relations, training, performance management, corrective action, discipline, and compensation.
  • Collaborate with HR to develop effective onboarding, training, cross-training, succession-planning, and employee-development programs.
  • Ensure policies and work rules are enforced and work with HR to ensure employment practices are administered consistently and appropriately.
  • Promote and model professionalism, accountability, teamwork, respectful communication, and continuous improvement focus.
  • Provide management and operational coverage across departments, facilities, and shifts during absences, staffing shortages, peak operating periods, emergencies, and other business needs.

  • Performance Management and Continuous Improvement
  • Establish/initiate, monitor, analyze, and report departmental key performance indicators (KPIs), operational metrics, goals, projects, and service-level expectations.
  • Evaluate productivity, inbound and outbound activity, shipping and receiving performance, warehouse capacity, inventory accuracy, overtime, product damage, equipment reliability, and other key operational, safety and efficiency measures.
  • Analyze performance results and operational variances, identify root causes, and implement sustained corrective actions.
  • Use performance data, audit findings, and operational observations to improve processes, strengthen accountability, reduce risk, and support continuous improvement.
  • Budget, Cost, and Resource Management
  • Support the development and management of departmental budgets, staffing plans, overtime controls, equipment requirements, and operating expenses.
  • Monitor labor, overtime, product damage, transportation, material handling, equipment, and facility costs.
  • Investigate budget and operating variances and implement actions to improve cost performance.
  • Evaluate resource and capital needs and recommend investments that support safety, capacity, service, productivity, and long-term operational effectiveness.
  • Ensure company facilities, equipment, inventory, and other resources are properly managed, maintained, and protected.

  • Safety and Risk Management
  • Be a Safety Champion, promoting a culture focused on safe material handling, accident prevention, hazard identification, and employee accountability.
  • Ensure incidents, near misses, property damage, unsafe conditions, equipment inspections, required training, certifications, and safety documentation are promptly addressed and properly maintained.
  • Partner with Safety personnel to investigate incidents, identify root causes, implement sustainable corrective actions, and evaluate risks involving facilities, equipment, traffic patterns, storage practices, and work processes.
  • Ensure operational practices protect employee safety, product integrity, inventory accuracy, food safety, traceability, and effective material flow.

  • Quality, Food Safety, and Regulatory Compliance
  • Serve as the SQF warehousing lead and ensure compliance with applicable SQF, GMP, SOP, HACCP, FDA, MDA, OSHA, sanitation, safety, and food safety requirements.
  • Ensure warehouse and logistics operations maintain product integrity, food safety, security, traceability, inventory accuracy, and audit readiness.
  • Lead or support internal and external quality, food safety, safety, systems, and operational audits.
  • Ensure audit findings and corrective actions are documented, assigned, completed, and reviewed for sustainability and effectiveness.
  • Maintain effective process controls over SAP transactions, RF scanning, inventory movements, facilities, safety practices, documentation, and operational reporting.
  • Ensure departmental records (written and digital), inspections, certifications, training documentation, and required reports are accurate, and properly maintained.
  • Compliance with all safety, food-safety, sanitation, security, and PPE requirements is required.

  • Communication and Cross-Functional Coordination
  • Position requires a high degree of proactive communication within department and across the organization regarding operational performance, staffing, safety, risks, priorities, projects, costs, and emerging issues.
  • Maintain high level communications within department, facilities, personnel, and organization to ensure departmental objectives, performance, priorities, and results are communicated.
  • Represent all operational areas under control in production, quality, safety, budget, and other business meetings.
  • Maintain accurate and timely management reporting to support operational and business decisions.
  • Inventory Control Management:
  • Maintain accurate physical and system inventory through effective inventory controls, cycle-count programs, physical inventories, and audit processes.
  • Investigate inventory adjustments and variances, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions.
  • Ensure appropriate controls for pallet identification, product location, stock placement, bin-to-bin movements, partial pallets, and row consolidation.
  • Coordinate year-end physical inventories, CHEP pallet counts, and other required asset-counting activities.
  • Ensure inventory practices support manufacturing operations, financial accuracy, customer service, and audit readiness.

  • Shipping and Distribution Management:
  • Lead shipping and distribution activities to ensure customer orders are staged, loaded, documented, and shipped accurately and on schedule.
  • Coordinate with scheduling, transportation, customer service, production, and other departments to execute shipment plans.
  • Monitor shipping volume, productivity, service performance, load readiness, and operational constraints.
  • Identify and resolve issues affecting shipment accuracy, delivery performance, customer service, or product integrity.
  • Ensure adequate staffing, equipment, training, and system support to meet shipping requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with established SAP, RF scanning, product-handling, safety, and documentation standards.

  • Receiving and Material Flow Management:
  • Lead the receipt, unloading, inspection, documentation, storage, and movement of inbound materials and products.
  • Coordinate drop-trailer, shuttle, outside warehouse, and related material-flow activities with production schedules and warehouse capacity.
  • Ensure inbound materials are accurately received, identified, recorded, and placed into inventory.
  • Monitor receiving volume, productivity, accuracy, service performance, and operational constraints.
  • Ensure receiving personnel are properly trained in SAP, RF scanning, stock placement, material handling, and applicable safety requirements.

  • SAP and Systems Management:
  • Serve as the departmental subject matter expert (SME) for SAP warehouse, shipping, receiving, and inventory-control processes. Maintain sufficient working knowledge to provide operational support for critical departmental SAP functions.
  • Ensure SAP and RF scanning transactions are completed accurately, consistently, and on time.
  • Monitor system activity and transaction accuracy across production and warehouse operations.
  • Identify system, process, or training gaps and coordinate corrective action.
  • Support SAP training and competency development for supervisors, analysts, lift drivers, material handlers, and other department employees.
  • Partner with appropriate departments to improve system utilization, reporting, data integrity, and process effectiveness.

  • Continuous Improvement, Special Projects, and Operational Support:
  • Support and participate in the organization’s Lean/continuous improvement agenda which may include attaining Lean/Six Sigma certifications.
  • Lead strategic and operational improvement initiatives that strengthen safety, inventory accuracy, productivity, space utilization, service, cost performance, system effectiveness, and workforce capability.
  • Use performance data, root-cause analysis, audit findings, operational observations, and employee input to identify priorities and implement sustainable improvements.
  • Lead and participate in cross-functional projects involving production, logistics, quality, safety, systems, facilities, and broader supply-chain performance.
  • Provide leadership for warehouse expansions, facility changes, system implementations, process redesign, capacity planning, and long-term resolution of operational issues.
  • Establish project objectives, priorities, resource requirements, timelines, responsibilities, and performance measures; monitor progress and communicate results to appropriate stakeholders.
  • Evaluate operational risks, business impacts, and change-management needs associated with projects and improvement initiatives.
  • Physical Requirements: Regularly stand, walk, and move throughout warehouse, dock, production-support, office, and outdoor areas. Occasionally sit for extended periods and bend, stoop, reach, climb stairs, and lift or move up to 50 pounds. Use hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard. Use computers, radios, mobile devices, SAP/RF equipment, and required personal protective equipment. Possess sufficient vision, hearing, and communication ability to observe operations, identify hazards, and communicate effectively. Travel between assigned facilities and maintain a valid driver’s license when driving is required.

    Environmental Requirements: Work is performed in offices, warehouses, loading-docks, production, and outdoor environments with regular exposure to vehicle traffic, moving equipment, noise, dust, odors, and temperature variations. The position may involve working around food products, packaging materials, and cleaning or sanitation chemicals.

    Travel Requirements: Frequent travel between MI facility locations. Occasional travel to Austin, IN. Maintenance of a valid driver’s license is required and adherence to all traffic and organizational travel policies are required.

    Job Description Note: The role of Supply Chain Manager is a salaried, exempt position with broad and evolving duties and responsibilities. Incumbent’s duties and responsibilities will evolve as operational demands require.

    Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in supply chain management, logistics, operations, business administration, or a related field required. An equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant experience may be considered.
  • Experience, Training, Skills, Knowledge & Personal Attributes:

  • 7+ years of progressive experience in warehousing, shipping, receiving, inventory control, distribution, or logistics, including at least three years recent management of supervisory and hourly employees.
  • Warehouse start-up experience desired.
  • Experience managing multiple, multi-shift facilities, budgets, staffing, KPIs/metrics, inventory programs, audits, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Manufacturing, food-production, or other regulated-industry experience highly desired.
  • SAP or comparable ERP/WMS experience required, including RF scanning, inventory transactions, and operational reporting.
  • Strong knowledge of warehousing, transportation, distribution, inventory-control, and material-handling operations.
  • Demonstrated leadership, employee-development, performance-management, conflict-resolution, and decision-making skills.
  • Strong analytical, root-cause analysis, project-management, change-management, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA, powered industrial truck safety, GMP, HACCP, SQF, sanitation, food safety, and traceability requirements.
  • Ability to manage operational priorities, staffing, capacity, budgets, costs, service expectations, and performance measures.
  • Strong written, verbal, interpersonal, presentation, and cross-functional communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and related business systems. Strong Excell and PowerPoint abilities.
  • Lean, Six Sigma, APICS, or other relevant supply-chain certification highly desired.
  • Ability to support multiple facilities and shifts and respond to operational issues outside normal working hours.
  • Maintain dependable attendance, regular on-site presence, and flexibility consistent with the leadership responsibilities of the position.
  • Ability to work independently, and as part of a larger supply chain team.
