Job Description

SUMMARY:

The Assistant Director’s overall mission is to enrich the co-curricular experience of students at Queens University of Charlotte. This role establishes and maintains an active, highly visible, and deeply engaged presence to sustain and grow strong collaborative relationships with students, campus partners, and external vendors. Primary responsibilities include oversight of the Campus Union Board, Weeks of Welcome, campus traditions, and the Charlotte Experience. This full-time, 12-month position reports to the Assistant Dean for Student Engagement.

This position is exempt from provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is not eligible to earn overtime pay or compensatory time off for additional hours worked. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:

    • Oversee the planning, execution, and evaluation of large-scale campus traditions, signature events, and student involvement opportunities, including but not limited to Weeks of Welcome, student facing Homecoming events, the Rexys (the annual student awards program) and other signature events.
    • Manage budgets, contracts, and expenditures related to student engagement programs.
    • Advise the Campus Union Board, the student led programming board, to foster their personal and professional growth.
    • Support the Campus Union Board through training, policy development, and resource allocation.
    • Lead the coordination and implementation of Charlotte Experience events that connect students to the city’s cultural, educational, and recreational opportunities.
    • Assess student engagement and feedback to continuously enhance programs.
    • Develop workshops, trainings, and initiatives that foster student leadership development.
    • Collaborate with the Student Engagement team to help coordinate new student orientation, train and select orientation leaders, and execute programming.
    • Manage logistics and risk management for on- and off-campus events.
    • Promote a campus environment that supports diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
    • Build partnerships with campus departments, faculty, and community organizations to expand engagement opportunities and ensure seamless campus logistics.
    • Work in partnership with Elon colleagues on programming opportunities and initiatives.
    • Manage and provide administrative support for Queens Engage, our student engagement online/app platform.
    • Maintain accurate records, assessments, and reports to measure impact and effectiveness.
    • Ensure compliance with institutional policies and applicable laws related to student activities and events.
    • Support marketing and communication efforts to promote engagement opportunities.
    • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate graduate assistants and student employees.

Non-Essential Duties

  • Other duties and special projects may be assigned to meet department and university needs.

Experience, Knowledge & Skills Preferred

    • Master’s degree preferred and 1 -2 years’ experience, including graduate school experience
    • Understanding of student development theory and its applications in higher education
    • Demonstrated experience in program development for diverse populations
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as skill in presenting effectively to and facilitating group process
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to quickly establish and maintain strong rapport with campus constituents
    • Solid problem-solving skills, critical thinking and the ability to analyze components and arrive at a logical course of action while knowing when to ask for assistance or direction
    • Demonstrated ability to develop learning outcomes and program assessment
    • Demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize multiple competing tasks and demands in a fast-paced environment
    • Computer proficiency (Microsoft Office preferred, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
    • Understanding and proficiency with multiple social media platforms
    • High level of energy and initiative, and willing and able to work with minimal supervision while contributing positively to a cooperative, high-functioning team
    • Demonstrated ability to maintain strict confidentiality of privileged information and perform duties that require tact, independent judgment, diplomacy, and discretion
    • Flexibility to regularly work evenings and weekends to achieve objectives of the position; ability and willingness to travel on behalf of the university, including trips requiring overnight stays (<25% of time).
