Senior Mainframe Systems Programmer ISV

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Mainframe Systems Programmer – ISV based in United States.

The Senior Mainframe Systems Programmer – ISV will provide critical technical support for enterprise mainframe environments, with a strong focus on ISV software and z/OS infrastructure. This role is responsible for installing, upgrading, configuring, testing, and implementing essential systems software that supports reliable business operations. You will troubleshoot incidents and problems, participate in on-call support, and contribute to technical projects and software evaluations. The position also involves working closely with vendors and internal teams to resolve complex technical issues and implement changes effectively. Success requires strong knowledge of z/OS and its supporting tools, combined with analytical thinking and a service-oriented mindset. This is a systems programming role rather than an applications development position, offering the opportunity to work deeply within a large-scale enterprise mainframe environment.

Accountabilities:
  • Participate in the on-call support rotation and respond effectively to incidents, major incidents, and emergency situations.
  • Diagnose and resolve incidents and problems across z/OS and associated ISV and systems software.
  • Handle incident, change, and problem management activities in accordance with established operational processes.
  • Install, upgrade, configure, customize, and maintain ISV software within the mainframe environment.
  • Set and maintain system and product parameters to ensure reliable and effective operation.
  • Support technical projects through implementation, testing, configuration, and other systems programming activities.
  • Research and evaluate new software and technologies relevant to the mainframe environment.
  • Communicate with software vendors and coordinate technical troubleshooting, support, and issue resolution.
  • Provide technical guidance to team members and other areas when resolving complex systems-related questions and problems.
  • Work with z/OS tools and utilities including TSO/ISPF, SDSF, and JCL.
  • Support Unix System Services (USS), including file system management and security.
  • Apply knowledge of z/OS services, systems programming functions, security, Parallel Sysplex, and catalog management.
  • Contribute to continuous improvements in operational processes, system reliability, and technical support practices.
Requirements:
  • 7+ years of experience working in a mainframe environment within a large enterprise, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant work experience.
  • Strong knowledge of z/OS and z/OS installation and maintenance, including SMP/E.
  • Strong working knowledge of TSO/ISPF, SDSF, and JCL.
  • Strong knowledge of Unix System Services (USS), including USS file system management and security.
  • Ability to perform the responsibilities of a Mainframe Systems Programmer and independently support moderately complex ISV installations.
  • Knowledge of z/OS security and systems programming functions.
  • Understanding of z/OS services architecture, Parallel Sysplex, and catalog management.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Ability to remain calm and effective during major incidents and emergency situations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with management-level stakeholders.
  • Strong customer service, collaboration, and teamwork skills.
  • Self-motivated, proactive, organized, and capable of taking initiative.
  • Good planning and organizational abilities, with a willingness and ability to continuously learn new technologies and processes.
Benefits:
  • Salary range of $85,000–$148,000 USD for a full-time schedule, with placement based on skills, experience, internal equity, and business needs.
  • Eligibility for an annual bonus based on company and individual performance.
  • Potential equity participation through an associate equity appreciation program, depending on eligibility.
  • Remote work flexibility when the role does not require presence at a client site.
  • Unlimited paid days off.
  • Three health plan options.
  • 401(k) plan with company match.
  • Dental, vision, short- and long-term disability, life and AD&D coverage, and flexible spending accounts.
  • Family-forming benefits, including fertility coverage and adoption or surrogacy reimbursement.
  • Paid childbearing and parental leave.
  • Education reimbursement, student loan assistance, or 529 college funding.
  • Sabbatical leave.
  • Wellness program and flexible work scheduling.
  • Opportunity to work with large-scale mainframe technologies and complex enterprise infrastructure.
  • Exposure to ongoing technical projects, systems modernization, vendor technologies, and cross-functional collaboration.
