The Opportunity:
We are seeking an experienced Senior Mortgage Accountant to join our accounting team. In this role, you will oversee the full mortgage accounting cycle, ensuring compliance with GAAP and industry regulations while delivering accurate financial reporting and analysis. You will play a key role in providing financial insights that support strategic decision-making and contribute to the continued growth and success of the organization.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage the accounting for mortgage loan originations, sales, securitizations, and servicing activities
- Prepare and review monthly journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial statements
- Oversee accounting for mortgage servicing rights (MSRs), including fair value analysis and impairment testing
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, RESPA, and applicable federal and state mortgage regulations
- Coordinate with secondary markets, operations, and servicing teams to ensure accurate loan-level data
- Support month-end and year-end close processes, including variance analysis and reporting
- Assist with internal and external audits, providing documentation and responding to auditor inquiries
- Identify and implement process improvements to increase accuracy and efficiency within the accounting function
- Mentor junior accounting staff and provide technical guidance on mortgage accounting matters
Qualifications:
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- 5+ years of accounting experience, with at least 3 years in mortgage or financial services
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and mortgage accounting standards
- Experience with mortgage servicing rights (MSRs) and loan sale accounting
- Proficiency in accounting software and ERP systems (e.g., Encompass, Black Knight, or similar)
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
Preferred:
- CPA certification
- Experience with secondary market transactions and GNMA/FNMA/FHLMC reporting
- Familiarity with CECL and hedging accounting concepts
- Prior experience in a high-volume lending environment
