Job Description

Staff Software Engineer - Trust & Safety

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff Software Engineer - Trust & Safety based in the United States.

This is a high-impact engineering role focused on building and scaling the systems that protect the integrity of a modern mental healthcare platform.
You will help design the technical foundation that detects and prevents fraud, billing anomalies, credential abuse, and other trust risks across complex provider, patient, and payer workflows.
The role sits at the intersection of platform engineering, security, and product, with responsibility for both architecture and hands-on execution.
You will define how Trust & Safety systems are built from the ground up, shaping tooling, infrastructure, and enforcement mechanisms.
This is a rare opportunity to establish a new engineering domain and influence how safety and compliance are operationalized at scale.
You will collaborate closely with product, operations, and clinical stakeholders in a highly cross-functional environment.
The work directly supports the reliability, safety, and accessibility of critical mental healthcare services.

Accountabilities:

Lead the design and development of Trust & Safety systems that detect, prevent, and remediate fraud, abuse, and policy violations across platform workflows.

  • Architect and build scalable full-stack systems (microservices, APIs, and data-driven services) that enforce Trust & Safety policies across users and internal operations
  • Develop tools and workflows to investigate, monitor, and mitigate risks such as billing anomalies, credential misuse, and suspicious platform activity
  • Define system architecture and engineering standards for a new Trust & Safety domain, including data models, detection logic, and enforcement mechanisms
  • Partner with cross-functional teams (product, operations, legal, and clinical stakeholders) to translate policy requirements into technical solutions
  • Build and integrate automated detection systems using modern data pipelines and infrastructure
  • Lead technical decision-making across planning, design, implementation, deployment, and post-launch monitoring
  • Mentor engineers, review system designs, and establish best practices for reliability, scalability, and maintainability
  • Contribute to on-call support and incident resolution for high-priority Trust & Safety issues
Requirements:

Experienced senior-level engineer with deep expertise in backend, full-stack, and distributed systems, and a strong focus on system reliability and abuse prevention.

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience in production environments
  • At least 1+ year of hands-on experience in Trust & Safety, fraud prevention, or risk systems
  • Experience helping build or shape a new engineering team or function from the ground up
  • Strong full-stack engineering experience with database-backed applications (SQL and/or NoSQL)
  • Experience designing and building microservices-based architectures
  • Proven ability to work across technical and non-technical stakeholders in cross-functional environments
  • Experience leading architecture discussions, defining patterns, and mentoring senior engineers
  • Strong ownership across the full software lifecycle: design, implementation, deployment, monitoring, and iteration
  • Experience working on complex, high-reliability systems with measurable real-world impact
  • Strong debugging and incident response skills, including on-call experience

Nice to have:

  • Startup or early-stage product experience
  • Experience with AWS or other cloud platforms
  • Background in Node.js and TypeScript environments
  • Familiarity with Kafka or event-driven architectures
  • Experience in highly regulated or mission-critical domains (finance, healthcare, security systems)
Benefits:
  • 100% remote work across the United States (excluding Hawaii)
  • Competitive compensation with equity
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance
  • HSA/FSA options for healthcare and dependent care
  • 401(k) retirement savings plan
  • Generous paid time off, including annual company-wide shutdown periods
  • Paid parental leave for all parents
  • Monthly wellness stipend and wellness initiatives
  • Home office stipend plus monthly internet/phone support
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for mental and physical well-being
  • Quarterly team stipend for collaboration and team-building activities
  • Inclusive employee resource groups fostering belonging and community
