Overview
Department 428 Energy Storage is responsible for the VIRGINIA Class and COLUMBIA Class design, development, qualification, integration, and testing for the main storage battery. The Energy Storage group supports submarine construction, lifecycle of in service classes, as well as the development of future energy storage technologies and future platforms. The main storage battery is a high energy, high power battery that provides backup power to the submarine.
This position requires a systems engineering approach for design, development, and requirements tracking. The position requires a large level of interfacing with other engineering disciplines including structural, ventilation, mechanical, and other electrical groups.
Daily tasks and responsibilities may include:
- Design, develop, and qualify the main storage battery
- Design, develop, and qualify monitoring systems
- Integrate system/components into ship and support ship arrangement (layout) meetings
- Develop and review specifications, schematics, wiring diagrams, installation drawings, test procedures, and maintenance standards
- Provide vendor oversight
- Manage cost and schedule performance of tasks
- Provide on-site technical support to Electric Boat shipyard
- Frequent communication with NAVSEA
- Research into future energy storage technologies
- Support advanced concept studies
- Travel as required
Responsibilities
- Excellent written, oral, and presentation communication skills
Qualifications
Required:
- 0-4 years post-graduate engineering experience
- BS in engineering is required
- Experience working successfully both in a team environment and independently
- Candidates must be willing and physically able to climb steep stairs and ladders to enter submarine and dry-docks, and ascend/descend scaffolding
Preferred:
- Basic understanding of electrical engineering principals
- Experience in systems engineering or project management role
- Experience in component development and qualification testing for DoD applications
- Willingness to travel and support extended off-site assignments as needed
- Previous Navy operational experience on submarines
- Active DoD Secret or Top Secret clearance
