Job Description
We are seeking a Research Specialist III to join the Tissue Core Team.
Tissue Core is one of the Shared Resource facilities at Moffitt Cancer Center (MCC) and serves as the institution’s central biorepository. Established in 1992, our mission is to collect, process, store, and distribute high-quality, annotated biospecimens to support innovative oncology research across basic, population, clinical, and translational disciplines.
Operating across multiple Moffitt campuses, Tissue Core functions as a hub for advanced histopathology and translational research. Our team specializes in:
- Histologic processing
- Tissue microarray construction
- Immunohistochemistry
- Comprehensive pathology services
Tissue Core is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of over 40 professionals, including Biorepository Coordinators, Research Specialists, Staff Scientists, Supervisors, Team Leads, Research Pathologists, and Administrators. Together, we support biospecimen banking operations, clinical trials, and biospecimen-driven research studies across the cancer center.
Position Highlights:
- The Research Specialist III should possess knowledge that will allow them to exercise independent judgment in developing methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining research results.
- Acts independently to determine methods and procedures on new assignments and may provide guidance and oversee the activities of lower level staff.
- Attends in-house courses, seminars and workshops, related to core activities and cancer biology.
- Actively participates and contributes to development of new histological technologies/techniques
The Ideal Candidate:
- Must demonstrate the ability to assist and train clients in instrument operation and independently performs regular laboratory maintenance and QC.
- Capable of autonomously performing all tasks required by the core for extended periods.
- Masters degree in Core related field of study is preferred
- Exercise independent judgment in dealing with procedures and technical troubleshooting.
- Identify challenges and develop creative, science‑driven solutions
- Strong organizational skills — able to manage tasks, prioritize, and maintain structured workflows.
- Consistently checks accuracy and ensures high-quality work
- Florida State License Histotechnologist required. ASCP license preferred.
Responsibilities:
- Perform general histology procedures; experience/knowledge of Immunohistochemistry workflows
- Perform advanced, non‑clinical histotechnology workflows that may require specialized training and expertise.
Credentials and Qualifications:
- BA/BS in Core related field of study is required, with core specific advanced training and work experience. Requires at least 5 years in science related work and/or post-graduate coursework. Requires at least 3 years in core facility specific applications and at least 2 years of that in research-based technology.
- Work experience in multi-user core facility preferred.
- Core specific licensure and/or certifications. Annual Human Subjects Training, i.e. CITI.
