The Opportunity
Lesley University's Department of Social Sciences and Humanities is seeking a highly qualified adjunct faculty member to teach: CLANG 1701 - American Sign Language I; Fall Semester 2026; Tuesdays/Fridays 8:00 am - 9:15 am; In-person, On-Campus.
Course Description:
This course will introduce basic skills in American Sign Language (ASL) and fingerspelling. ASL training will include learning how facial expressions serve as punctuation in a manual language. Topics will include Deaf culture and its criticism of deafness as viewed by the medical profession as well as the education of Deaf children.
A successful candidate will have:
Master's degree in American Sign Language, Deaf Studies, or a closely related field (required); PhD (preferred)
Experience teaching ASL at the college level
Native or near-native proficiency in American Sign Language
Demonstrated knowledge of Deaf culture, Deaf history, and contemporary issues affecting the Deaf community
Demonstrated commitment to communicative, student-centered, inclusive, and equitable language teaching practices
Ability to integrate cultural competence into language instruction
Experience using learning management systems and instructional technology to support teaching and learning
