About This Position
Responsible for monitoring and coordination of patient care and other activities throughout the institution during their assigned shift. Assumes nursing department administrative responsibilities in the absence of the VP for Patient Care Services. May also act temporarily for the President/CEO in his/her absence in accordance with established administrative policy.
MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Coordinates the delivery of quality patient care within established JMH and nursing practice standards, policies, and procedures.
Demonstrates familiarity with TJC (The Joint Commission) standards and New York State Health Code Rules and Regulations and promotes compliance.
Interprets and enforces hospital and nursing department policies to all hospital employees.
Cooperates with nurse managers/coordinators and Nursing Administration in the maintenance and control of operating and capital budget parameters as well as productivity levels.
Utilizes staffing ratios and the patient classification/acuity system to allocate personnel as needed.
Actively participates in quality improvement programs.
Acts as a resource to guide and advise nursing staff for patient care related issues. Assists nursing staff with critical thinking processes. Assures appropriate interventions are taken.
Assists directors and clinical leads with the performance review for nursing personnel by offering input regarding observations made and interactions with staff.
Assists the managers and coordinators in the evaluation of performance of staff members for merit increases, promotions, transfers, disciplinary action, and separation of services.
Maximizes utilization of employee skills, capabilities, training, and encourages the development of his/her staff.
Promotes effective utilization and maintenance of materials, supplies, equipment and facilities.
Utilizes effective communication skills to inspire, motivate, or otherwise influence employees in the development of a harmonious working environment. Resolves problems needing immediate resolution by utilizing appropriate principles of counseling and discipline to address behaviors that negatively impact the workplace. Refers others to the appropriate manager or coordinator.
Provides an atmosphere conducive to staff development and encourages learning.
Completes the daily administrative report for their shift.
Utilizes available resources to maintain competencies through attendance in pertinent college credit classes, outside inservices and/or viewing/attendance of practice related inservices in addition to mandatory offerings.
Attends monthly Patient Care Services meetings and quarterly Administrative Coordinator meetings.
Participates in the research, promotion, and development of policies, programs, standards and innovations.
Implements specific responsibilities as delegated by the nursing director.
Keeps director informed of situations and activities affecting personnel, physicians, staff and patients. Utilizes the Administrator –on-call when needed.
Promotes interdepartmental cooperation.
Monitors and enforces Safety, Infection Control, Universal Precautions, Internal and External Disaster protocols. Allocates personnel to cover emergency situations.
Coordinates patient admissions, discharges, or transfers on assigned shift. Assists with the decision to place the patient in observation status or admit to inpatient status.
Demonstrates the skills and knowledge necessary to supervise or provide care and/or psycho-social interventions appropriate to ages of patients served.
When Staffing needs dictate, may work an alternate shift or be scheduled to work on an on-call basis. Employees scheduled on call must report within 30 minutes of receiving a call. Operating Room staff must report within 20 minutes of receiving a call.
EDUCATION: Must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing; BS degree desirable. NYS licensure and current registration required. BLS required. ACLS and PALS preferred.
EXPERIENCE: Three to five years’ experience in nursing service during which potential administrative and supervisory competence has been demonstrated.
CONTACTS: Frequent contact with hospital staff, nursing personnel on all units, doctors, and outside officials; occasional contact with patients and visitors.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Stands and walks most of shift.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Occasional exposure to unpredictable actions of others and undesirable conditions. Potential exists for exposure to blood and body fluids, infectious diseases, cuts, burns, strains of injury from patients or equipment.
