Summary

The Painter/Blaster is responsible for performing abrasive blasting, surface preparation, and application of industrial coatings on structural steel, piping, tanks, vessels, and equipment. This position ensures surfaces are properly prepared and coated in accordance with project specifications, manufacturer requirements, and safety standards while maintaining the highest levels of quality and productivity.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Previous experience in industrial blasting and painting preferred.
• Knowledge of industrial coating systems, surface preparation standards, and coating application techniques.
• Ability to safely operate blasting and painting equipment.
• Familiarity with refinery, petrochemical, power generation, manufacturing, or heavy industrial environments.
• Ability to read and understand technical documents, specifications, and safety procedures.
• Strong commitment to safety, quality, and teamwork.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of industrial surface preparation methods, abrasive blasting techniques, coating application procedures, and corrosion control practices; knowledge of industrial painting equipment, blasting equipment, coating materials, and OSHA safety requirements.
• Knowledge of coating specifications, manufacturer's technical data sheets, quality control procedures, environmental requirements, and industry best practices related to protective coatings.
• Skill in operating abrasive blasting equipment, spray painting equipment, airless spray systems, compressors, moisture separators, and related tools and equipment.
• Skill in preparing, mixing, and applying industrial coatings to achieve specified finishes, thicknesses, and quality standards.
• Ability to read and interpret coating specifications, blueprints, work instructions, safety procedures, and technical documents.
• Ability to inspect surfaces and completed work to identify defects, contamination, coating failures, and non-conforming conditions.
• Ability to accurately measure and document wet film thickness, dry film thickness, surface profile, and environmental readings.
• Ability to safely handle hazardous materials, coatings, solvents, and blasting media in accordance with established procedures.

Essential Functions

• Perform abrasive blasting activities using approved equipment and blasting media to prepare surfaces for coating applications.
• Clean and prepare surfaces by removing rust, mill scale, paint, corrosion, grease, dirt, and other contaminants in accordance with project specifications.
• Apply industrial coatings, primers, epoxies, urethanes, linings, and specialty coatings using brushes, rollers, conventional spray, and airless spray equipment.
• Mix, thin, and prepare coating materials according to manufacturer recommendations and project requirements.
• Inspect prepared surfaces and completed coatings to ensure compliance with specifications, quality standards, and customer requirements.
• Measure and record wet film thickness (WFT), dry film thickness (DFT), environmental conditions, and other quality control requirements.
• Operate, inspect, maintain, and troubleshoot blasting and painting equipment, including blast pots, compressors, hoses, pumps, spray guns, and related tools.
• Construct containment systems, masking, tarping, and protective coverings to prevent contamination of adjacent areas.
• Read and interpret coating specifications, work packages, technical data sheets, safety data sheets (SDS), and project requirements.
• Handle, store, and dispose of blasting media, coatings, and hazardous materials in accordance with company policies and environmental regulations.
• Maintain work areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
• Follow all company safety policies, customer requirements, and regulatory standards.

• Communicate effectively with supervisors, inspectors, customers, and other craft personnel regarding work progress and quality concerns.

Physical Demands

• Frequently lifts, carries, pushes, and pulls materials, tools, hoses, equipment, and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds; occasionally lifts heavier items with assistance or mechanical devices.
• Regularly stands, walks, bends, kneels, stoops, crouches, crawls, climbs ladders, and works from scaffolding, elevated platforms, and aerial lifts.
• Performs repetitive hand, arm, shoulder, and wrist movements while blasting, spraying, brushing, rolling, and handling equipment.
• Requires manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination to operate blasting and painting equipment safely and effectively.
• Works in confined spaces, elevated locations, and restricted access areas as required.
• Must be able to distinguish colors and coating variations necessary for proper paint application and quality control.Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to:
• hard hat, safety glasses, face shield, gloves, hearing protection, FR clothing, steel-toed footwear, FR clothing, fall protection, respiratory protection and other project-specific PPE.

Work Environment

• Works primarily in industrial construction, maintenance, turnaround, petrochemical, refinery, power generation, and manufacturing environments.
• Regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions, including heat, cold, humidity, rain, and varying environmental conditions.
• Frequently exposed to dust, blasting media, paint overspray, fumes, noise, vibration, and other industrial hazards.
• Performs work in active construction sites, operating facilities, confined spaces, elevated work areas, and around heavy equipment.
• May work near energized equipment, process systems, and other operational hazards while adhering to all applicable safety requirements.
