Job Description
- School Nurse
Job Summary: School nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well-being, academic success, and lifelong achievement of students. The school nurse will embody the mission, vision, and core values of Palm Beach Christian Academy while demonstrating a commitment of professionalism within the PBCA community. Schedule is ten months per year, from August through May.
Reports To: Palm Beach Christian Academy Principal Downtown Campus
Prerequisites
Evidence of strong Christian faith and values.
- Commitment to school’s vision and mission.
- Ability to meet all minimum eligibility requirements to be a member of Family Church.
- Supportive of the doctrinal statements as found in the Baptist Faith & Message of 2000.
- Degree from accredited school of practical nursing.
- Minimum three to five years’ experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse.
- Working knowledge of public health problems and procedures for treatment in coordination with other health and social service agencies.
- Must pass drug test, fingerprints, and local background check.
Essential Job Requirements
- Provides care to students and staff who need emergency care due to injury or who present with an acute illness.
- Within the nurse’s scope of practice and state laws, trains and delegates to unlicensed school personnel medication administration and/or the delivery of health services as ordered by a licensed healthcare provider.
- Assists faculty and staff in monitoring chronic medical conditions.
- Medication administration, including coordination of care and student emergency action plans related to diabetes, seizures, asthma, allergies, and use of emergency medications and equipment i.e. Epi-Pen, Glucagon, Diastat, insulin pumps and Dexacoms.
- Develop an individualized Health Plan for children with chronic disease.
- Assures that school policies and procedures adhere to legal and regulatory statutes and ethical standards of nursing practice.
- Address potential health problems that are barriers to learning or symptoms of underlying medical conditions by coordinating and assisting with screenings i.e. vision, hearing and speech.
- Provides staff educational in-service (but not limited to) CPR training and bloodborne pathogen and infection control updates.
- Monitors immunizations and reports communicable diseases as required by law.
- Review immunization records for compliance with state laws and school policies and maintain a current record of immunizations.
- Asses the physical environment of the school to improve health and safety, including the assessment of the playground, indoor quality evaluation or review patterns of illness or injury to determine source of concern and communicate to appropriate individuals.
- Assessment and intervention for injury/illness.
- Administer vision and hearing tests as mandated by local department.
- Case management and care plan development for identified health problems.
- Health consultation with parents, staff, and physicians.
- Liaison to school, community, and/or health care providers.
- Health education and promotion.
- Review of school health records.
- Provides leadership in the development and evaluation of school health policies, programs, and the promotion of a healthy school environment.
- Oversee the collection of health data and submission of health reports for immunization and other school health services.
- Perform other duties related to this position as requested by the principal.
Physical, Environmental and Mental Requirements
- Express ideas verbally to convey instructions to staff/students/families accurately and correctly.
- Perceive sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction and to receive detailed information through oral communication.
- Stand and walk for sustained periods of time.
- Able to lift up to 30 pounds.
- Repetitive motion of wrists, hands, and fingers.
- Close visual acuity required for viewing a computer monitor, preparing and analyzing data and figures, transcribing and reading.
- Environment is both indoors and outdoors.
- Taxing environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and a varied diverse array of contacts.
- Maintain emotional control under stress.
