Job Description
Position Summary: The Yard Maintenance Worker helps keep the lumber yard, buildings, and grounds clean, orderly, and safe. Responsibilities include debris removal, sweeping, handling unsellable lumber, emptying waste containers, controlling weeds, and performing minor repairs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Pick up and dispose of debris, litter, scrap materials, and discarded packaging throughout the yard.
- Sweep warehouses, storage buildings, work areas, and other designated spaces.
- Collect, sort, and remove cull lumber—lumber that is damaged or otherwise not sellable—as directed.
- Empty trash containers and designated dumpsters using approved procedures and appropriate equipment.
- Weed-whack and manually remove weeds around buildings, fences, storage areas, and other parts of the property.
- Keep walkways, entrances, loading areas, and access routes clear of debris and obstructions.
- Perform minor repairs and basic upkeep of buildings, fixtures, and yard facilities within the employee’s training and ability.
- Report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, and repairs requiring additional assistance to the supervisor.
- Maintain cleaning supplies, tools, and equipment in good working condition.
- Follow company safety procedures and use required personal protective equipment.
- Perform other related maintenance and cleanup duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Ability to use basic hand tools and operate cleaning and grounds maintenance equipment safely.
- Basic mechanical aptitude and the ability to perform small repairs.
- Ability to follow instructions, prioritize assigned tasks, and work independently.
- Dependability, attention to detail, and a willingness to perform hands-on work.
- Previous maintenance, groundskeeping, or lumber yard experience preferred.
- Previous forklift experience a plus.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
The position involves indoor and outdoor work in varying weather conditions. Duties require standing, walking, bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, and lifting or carrying debris, lumber, supplies, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds regularly and 80 pounds occasionally. Appropriate equipment or assistance must be used when handling materials that exceed these limits or cannot be safely handled independently due to their size or shape.
