Job Summary
The Field Installation Technician will install and deploy point-of-sale (POS) hardware, networking equipment, and low-voltage infrastructure at customer locations throughout the Midwest and across the United States. This is a field-based position supporting retail stores, restaurants, warehouses, and distribution centers.
Primary Job Responsibilities
- Install, configure, and troubleshoot POS systems, PCs, printers, scanners, routers, switches, wireless access points, and related technology.
- Pull, route, terminate, and test Cat5e, Cat6, and fiber optic cabling following industry standards.
- Perform pre-installation site surveys and identify installation requirements.
- Read blueprints, floor plans, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation.
- Collaborate with Project Managers, customers, and fellow technicians to complete projects safely and on schedule.
- Troubleshoot hardware, connectivity, and installation issues in the field.
- Maintain accurate installation documentation and project reports.
- Ensure company equipment, tools, and vehicles are properly maintained.
- Deliver outstanding customer service while representing DecisionPoint Technologies professionally.
- Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Job Competencies, Skills & Experience
- Education & Experience: High School Diploma or GED required; 2–3 years of field service experience repairing mechanical and electronic hardware; Previous experience working in hospitals, clinics, laboratories, or other healthcare environments; Certifications related to printer repair, networking, or field service are a plus.
- Technical Expertise: Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills; Experience servicing Zebra thermal printers, barcode printers, or healthcare printing solutions; Experience supporting network-connected printing devices; Familiarity with HIPAA requirements and working in patient-care environments.
- Communication: Excellent customer service and communication skills; Excellent written documentation skills.
- Organization & Time Management: Experience managing multiple service calls while maintaining organized tools and inventory; Strong organizational and time management abilities; Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Proficiency: Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook; Valid driver's license with a clean driving record; Comfortable climbing ladders, navigating healthcare environments, and traveling throughout the assigned territory.
Travel Requirements
Approximately 90% travel throughout the Midwest and other regions of the United States. Overnight travel is required. Weekend work may be necessary based on customer schedules and project timelines.
Physical Requirements
Physical demands include frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, twisting, reaching, and ladder climbing, along with the manual dexterity required to operate computers, perform fine-hardware installation, run tests, connect cabling, and handle packaging. Candidates must be able to regularly lift, carry, push, and pull equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance—such as printers, toolkits, replacement parts, and shipping supplies—while possessing sufficient visual acuity, hearing, and communication skills to inspect hardware, read screens and labels, execute quality testing, and collaborate effectively with coworkers.
