Job Description

Animator

This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for an Animator in Canada.

This role is focused on bringing life, personality, and responsiveness to characters, creatures, weapons, and props within a AAA sci-fi action game. You will work closely under art leadership and collaborate across disciplines to ensure animations align with the project’s visual direction and gameplay needs. The position involves both creating high-quality animation sets and integrating them directly into a proprietary engine, contributing to a smooth and scalable animation pipeline. You will play a key role in shaping how movement feels in-game, ensuring animations enhance immersion, responsiveness, and player experience. Working in a creative, fast-paced environment, you will collaborate with technical and artistic teams to solve pipeline challenges and optimize performance. This is a hands-on role where your work directly defines the fluidity and impact of core gameplay moments.

Accountabilities:

In this role, you will create, implement, and optimize animation content while ensuring smooth integration into the game engine and alignment with gameplay and artistic direction.

  • Create high-quality animations for characters, creatures, weapons, and props that align with the game’s sci-fi aesthetic and gameplay requirements.
  • Implement animation states, transitions, and events using tools within a proprietary game engine.
  • Collaborate with technical artists and rigging teams to support animation systems and develop effective solutions for production challenges.
  • Own the animation pipeline from asset creation through to in-engine implementation, ensuring consistency and efficiency.
  • Reuse and adapt existing animation assets creatively to maximize efficiency and maintain production scalability.
  • Communicate progress, updates, and blockers clearly while working closely with cross-disciplinary teams.
  • Ensure animations are optimized for performance and meet technical constraints for real-time gameplay.
  • Contribute to improving animation workflows, pipelines, and integration processes within the project.
Requirements:

You bring strong technical animation skills, a deep understanding of movement and character mechanics, and experience working in game development environments.

  • 4+ years of experience in animation for games, ideally in a production or AAA environment.
  • Strong proficiency in 3D software such as Maya or 3ds Max, as well as animation state machine tools.
  • Solid understanding of timing, weight, physics, and human or creature anatomy as it relates to animation.
  • Experience implementing animations in-engine and working with game animation systems.
  • Strong knowledge of animation optimization techniques for real-time performance.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively across multiple disciplines.
  • Ability to manage animation work independently from creation through implementation.

Nice to have:

  • Experience working on AAA game projects or established IPs.
  • Familiarity with rigging concepts, skinning, and game-ready skeleton structures.
  • Basic understanding of rigging tools and workflows.
  • Experience animating in-engine cameras or cinematic sequences.
  • Passion for sci-fi games, storytelling, or related media.
  • Experience working within existing IP constraints and asset libraries.
Benefits:
  • Competitive annual salary ranging from $70,000 to $85,000 CAD.
  • Remote-first work environment with flexible working arrangements.
  • Opportunity to work on a AAA sci-fi action title with a collaborative creative team.
  • High-impact role shaping core gameplay feel through animation quality.
  • Exposure to a proprietary engine and advanced game production pipelines.
  • Collaborative environment working closely with experienced artists, designers, and engineers.
  • Opportunity to contribute to a well-established IP in a major production setting.
  • Long-term career growth within a creative and independent game development studio.
