Job Description
Zingerman's Deli has a thriving Catering department with annual sales of $3.4 million. We are looking for a new Catering Kitchen Manager–an enthusiastic and self-directed individual to oversee the preparation, organization, and execution of food production for all catering orders and events. We’d love for you to join our team! This position is responsible for catering kitchen staff, inventory, food safety, and quality control to ensure orders are completed efficiently and delivered on time.
This is a full-time, salaried position that primarily works during the morning and daytime, but also needs the flexibility to work some evenings, weekends, and holidays. This position reports to the Catering Director and manages a staff of 4 - 6 people.
Compensation:
- $58,000-$62,000 annual base salary
- 3% of service fees (approximately $5,000 a year) in addition to base salary
- Full-time, Salaried position
- 45 to 50 hours per week, including mornings, some evenings, weekends, and holidays (we are closed on Christmas Day and Thanksgiving)

Performance Expectations- Essential Functions:
- Oversees the preparation, organization, and execution of food production for catering orders and events
- Assists in menu creation and revision in collaboration with the Catering Director and Catering Events Managers
- Brings all guests and staff amazing Zingerman's Catering and Events experiences!
- Responsible for hiring, training, coaching, and performance reviews for Catering Production staff, following the principles of Servant Leadership, Stewardship, and Zingerman's Entrepreneurial Approach
- Leads Catering Kitchen staff in cleaning and maintaining all Catering kitchen equipment and fixtures, coordinating with the cleaning crew when needed
- Communicates menu details and changes effectively with the Kitchen and Production staff
- Manages monthly inventory
- Orders produce and other items needed to fulfill catering guest orders, including with internal departments
- Maintains good communication across all internal departments
- Maintains an organized and properly rotated Catering walk-in
- Establishes strong relationships with catering managers (sales, event, and service staff captains)
- Establishes and maintains good communication and a positive working relationship with the Deli management team.
- Assists in creating a vision for the future of the Catering Department
- Works at other locations and venues as needed to execute off-site catering events according to the specifications
- Passes all training requirements required of Catering Production, Kitchen, and Back of House staff
- Revises Catering training documents as needed
- Resolves any customer complaints that are "passed up" from staff and/or asks for help from the Catering Director or Catering Sales Manager
- Provides hands-on help to Kitchen and Sandwich Line staff when needed
- Arrives on time for all scheduled shifts, meetings, and classes
The Success Patterns for this position are:
- Minimum 2-3 years experience in a high-end restaurant
- Minimum 1-2 years of experience in a manager or supervisor role
- High levels of emotional intelligence and ability to work effectively in a No-Drama workplace
- Experience in event planning and managing details of executing an event
- Inventory and costing experience preferred
- Strong computer skills: Caterease, Google docs, HRIS
- Strong and effective written and verbal communication skills
- Great problem solving skills, especially in-the-moment
- Serv-Safe food Certification
- Provides leadership that inspires teamwork, generates energy, enthusiasm, and drives results
- Has a reputation for excellent relations with customers, vendors, other ZCoB businesses, and Kitchen staff
- Has the ability to design, implement, and to continuously improve the systems and procedures that lead to success
- Has experience in the training and development of staff members
- Is self-directed and able to work independently, as well as be an integral member of the Delicatessen management team
- Has the ability to deliver the Zingerman's Experience to internal and external guests of Zingerman’s Catering and Events
- Able to work holidays, weekends, events, and other peak periods of the Catering business
- Willingness to ask for help and assistance where needed in order to get great food and service to guests
- Desired - Experience with Lean management, continuous improvement and Open Book Management

Physical Requirements:
- Bending, stooping, walking, and standing for long periods at a time
- Must be able to safely relocate up to 40 lbs.
- Ability to ascend/descend between multiple levels of the Deli building
