Job Description

Staff Software Engineer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff Software Engineer based in United States.

This is a high-impact opportunity for a senior engineering leader to help shape the technical foundation of a brand-new healthcare technology platform.
You will remain deeply hands-on, writing production code while influencing architecture and engineering standards across the organization.
The role combines technical leadership, complex product development, mentorship, and close collaboration with Product, Design, and Clinical teams.
You will tackle ambiguous, 0-to-1 challenges and turn clinical workflows into scalable, reliable software that delivers meaningful user and patient outcomes.
You will also help strengthen engineering practices around reliability, technical debt, developer experience, and AI-assisted development.
The environment is fast-paced and startup-oriented, offering significant autonomy and the opportunity to influence systems used across a growing healthcare ecosystem.
This role is ideal for an experienced full-stack engineer who enjoys solving difficult problems while contributing to a mission with meaningful social impact.

Accountabilities
  • Own and drive architecture decisions across the technology stack, establishing scalable patterns, technical standards, and engineering practices for the broader team.
  • Lead complex and ambiguous product initiatives from technical discovery and design through implementation, deployment, and delivery to end users.
  • Build and maintain high-quality full-stack software using technologies such as TypeScript, Node.js, React, PostgreSQL, AWS, and ECS.
  • Partner closely with Product, Design, and Clinical stakeholders to translate complex clinical workflows and business needs into scalable technical solutions.
  • Mentor senior and other engineers through code reviews, technical design discussions, pairing, and ongoing engineering guidance.
  • Lead initiatives that improve system reliability, address technical debt, strengthen engineering efficiency, and enhance the overall developer experience.
  • Champion the effective use of AI-assisted coding tools and help establish practical, high-quality AI development standards across the engineering organization.
  • Take ownership of 0-to-1 product development and help establish the technical foundations required for future platform growth.
  • Communicate technical decisions clearly and align stakeholders across multiple teams around architecture, priorities, trade-offs, and implementation strategies.
Requirements
  • 8+ years of full-stack software engineering experience, including at least 4 years working at a Senior Engineer level and a strong track record of delivering complex production systems.
  • Demonstrated experience leading technical initiatives that span multiple teams, services, systems, or architectural domains.
  • Extensive experience building products and systems from 0-to-1, with the ability to operate effectively in ambiguous and rapidly changing environments.
  • Strong hands-on experience with modern full-stack development, ideally including TypeScript, Node.js, React, PostgreSQL, AWS, and ECS.
  • Proven ability to use AI coding and development tools as part of a daily engineering workflow while maintaining strong standards for code quality and technical judgment.
  • Experience working within early-stage, venture-backed startup environments, ideally from seed through Series C.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts and build alignment among technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • A demonstrated ability to mentor engineers, influence technical direction, and raise engineering standards across a team.
  • Passion for improving mental healthcare and an interest in building technology that can positively impact patients, clinicians, and researchers.
  • Experience in HIPAA-regulated healthcare or fintech environments is a plus.
  • Experience integrating AI or machine learning capabilities into production systems is a plus.
  • Candidates based in San Francisco who can work from an office approximately two days per week are preferred.
  • Candidates from diverse backgrounds and with non-traditional career paths are encouraged to apply, even if they do not meet every listed qualification.
Benefits
  • Opportunity to help shape the technical foundation of a new healthcare technology platform.
  • Highly impactful work connecting software engineering with improved patient, clinician, and research outcomes.
  • Significant technical ownership and influence over architecture and engineering practices.
  • Collaborative environment with close partnership across Engineering, Product, Design, and Clinical teams.
  • Opportunity to work with a modern technology stack including TypeScript, Node.js, React, PostgreSQL, AWS, and ECS.
  • Strong focus on mentorship, technical growth, and engineering excellence.
  • Opportunity to influence how AI-assisted development tools are adopted across the engineering organization.
  • Inclusive and equitable workplace committed to supporting people from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • Mission-driven environment focused on advancing mental healthcare.
