Job Description
SUMMARY AND OBJECTIVE
As part of the MCAD Community and the Campus Safety team, the Campus Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring a safe and secure campus environment while providing a high level of customer service. All duties will be carried out in accordance with local, state and federal laws, as well as college policies. The Campus Safety Officer must be sensitive to college needs, employee and student goodwill, and overall brand equity of MCAD as an employer and educational institution.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs all duties with customer service and compassion in mind, as it relates to students, staff, faculty, and MCAD guests. Builds and maintains professional relationships with MCAD community members, including students, staff, faculty, guests, prospective students, etc.
- Communicates directly with community members and campus visitors either by telephone, electronically, or face to face; responds promptly to questions, inquiries, customer concerns, etc. handling and resolving when possible, with professionalism and clarity.
- Patrol the college buildings and property surrounding the campus, remaining alert for all accidents, incidents, and irregularities, and reporting all such conditions.
- Responds to incoming calls, respond to those related to the scope of Campus Safety, and appropriately routes those not in scope.
- Respond to emergencies by assessing the situation, employing tact, diplomacy, respect, and individual judgment to remedy and/or maintain control and calm.
- Monitor Campus Safety systems, responding and escalating as needed.
- Prepare necessary reports relating to all incidents encountered on applicable forms in a precise manner acceptable for outside distribution.
- Record and secure all lost and found items, and follow Campus Safety procedures for returning the property to the owner.
- Enforce parking rules and regulations for all MCAD parking locations.
- This position is considered essential personnel and must be available outside of normal working hours when needed to support the college operations.Available to work after hours and/or on weekends in emergency situations, including but not limited to:
- Severe weather conditions
- Flooding/water damage
- Fire/building damage
- Civil unrest
- Threats of violence
- Active shooter
- Robberies/break-ins/vandalism
- Available to work additional hours around key campus event periods. Black out periods for paid time off benefits may apply to these periods. Events include but are not limited to:
- Campus move in
- Move out dates
- Art Sale
- Art Auction
- Commencement
- Perform other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- High School diploma, or equivalent, required. Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree, preferred.
- Valid driver’s license, required.
- First Aid and CPR certification, strongly preferred.
- Training in de-escalation, self-defense, security and/or police training, preferred.
- General security experience, particularly in a college environment, preferred.
- General customer service experience, strongly preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel and Word) or equivalent software experience, required.
- Demonstrated understanding of law enforcement and the key issues that impact a security officer, strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize when dealing with multiple high-priority situations, strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to facilitate communication and collaborate across departments, strongly preferred.
BACKGROUND CHECK
This position has been identified as security sensitive, and as such will require a background check. At the discretion of the college, various background checks may be done during the course of employment. Must possess a valid Minnesota driver’s license, good record; satisfactory Motor Vehicle DMV Check required. Must pass the Kari Koskinen Manager Background Check.
ENVIRONMENT
This position operates predominantly on MCAD's campus grounds, using both internal and external facilities, with occasional exposure to weather conditions such as rain, snow, etc. This position requires the ability and willingness to closely partner with team members and colleagues in other departments. This role will at times use standard office equipment such as computers and phones, and depending on the role may require the use of various tools or machinery. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
