Job Description

Local Government Paralegal

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Local Government Paralegal based in United States.

This is a high-impact, fully remote opportunity for an experienced paralegal supporting a fast-paced U.S. local government legal practice.
You’ll serve as a key operational partner to multiple attorneys, helping manage a substantial portfolio of advisory, transactional, legislative, and litigation matters.
The role requires exceptional organization, sound judgment, and the ability to keep more than 100 active matters moving simultaneously.
You’ll prepare legal and municipal documents, coordinate deadlines, manage communications, and anticipate attorney needs before they become urgent.
Your work will directly support city departments, council activities, contracts, litigation, legislation, and other government-related initiatives.
This environment suits a proactive professional who enjoys ownership, high standards, autonomy, and working under pressure.
The position is structured as a 100% remote independent contractor role supporting a U.S.-based legal team during Eastern Time business hours.

Accountabilities:
  • Manage a high-volume caseload of approximately 100–120+ active matters, including advisory requests, legal memoranda, departmental matters, special projects, contract reviews, legislation, and transactional work.
  • Draft and prepare ordinances, resolutions, amendments, memoranda, contracts, pleadings, discovery materials, presentations, and municipal agenda documents for attorney review.
  • Support litigation matters through case management, deadline tracking, document coordination, and proactive follow-up.
  • Maintain organized caseload and workload reports across multiple attorneys, helping allocate assignments according to capacity and priorities.
  • Monitor incoming communications, interpret incomplete or cryptic requests, identify required actions, and move matters forward without waiting for detailed instructions.
  • Coordinate with city department leaders, external stakeholders, attorneys, and support personnel to ensure timely and accurate delivery of legal work.
  • Schedule meetings, calls, hearings, city sessions, project discussions, trainings, and other municipal activities.
  • Proactively manage deadlines and escalate risks, helping attorneys stay ahead of critical deliverables and ensuring that no important task or deadline is overlooked.
  • Coordinate work across multiple attorneys and support teams, including delegating tasks to additional legal resources when appropriate.
  • Assist with contract drafting, transactional matters, litigation support, municipal projects, city council meetings, special meetings, election-related matters, and other local government initiatives.
  • Maintain a consistently high standard of accuracy and quality while operating in a demanding, deadline-driven environment.
Requirements:
  • Approximately 2–5 years of paralegal experience, preferably within a U.S.-based law firm or legal environment.
  • Strong exposure to litigation and experience supporting multiple attorneys simultaneously are highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a large volume of concurrent legal matters while maintaining accuracy, organization, and momentum.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills, with the ability to produce polished professional and legal documents.
  • Exceptional organizational, prioritization, follow-through, and deadline-management skills.
  • Strong initiative and the ability to independently identify what needs to be done and take action without constant supervision.
  • Sound judgment and critical-thinking skills, particularly when interpreting incomplete, ambiguous, or highly contextual requests.
  • Ability to proactively anticipate attorney needs, manage up, identify risks, and keep work progressing.
  • High emotional intelligence, professionalism, reliability, and a collaborative, low-ego approach to teamwork.
  • Government, municipal, or local government legal experience is beneficial but not required.
  • Comfortable working independently in a fully remote environment while collaborating closely with a fast-moving U.S. legal team.
  • Availability to work approximately 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. U.S. Eastern Time.
  • A disciplined, resilient, detail-oriented mindset and the ability to perform effectively under sustained pressure.
Benefits:
  • 100% remote work arrangement.
  • Independent contractor opportunity open to global/offshore candidates.
  • Monthly compensation of approximately $2,500–$3,000 USD, depending on experience and qualifications.
  • Opportunity to work directly with multiple attorneys and gain exposure to municipal governance, contracts, legislation, litigation, and advisory work.
  • High-impact responsibilities with significant autonomy and ownership.
  • Direct mentorship and day-to-day collaboration with experienced legal professionals.
  • Opportunity to develop specialized expertise in local government legal operations.
  • High-performance environment with clear expectations and an emphasis on accountability, initiative, and quality.
  • Please note: This is an independent contractor position and does not include a traditional U.S. employee benefits or paid-time-off package.
