Job Description

Director of Applied Accounting Technology

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Director of Applied Accounting Technology based in United States.

This is a high-impact hybrid leadership role combining senior accounting expertise with firm-wide AI and workflow innovation.
You’ll oversee a focused portfolio of clients while designing technology-enabled processes that can scale across the organization.
The role sits at the intersection of accounting, automation, generative AI, and professional services.
You’ll identify operational pain points, lead AI implementations, and turn successful experiments into repeatable workflows and systems.
Your client engagements will serve as real-world laboratories for testing and refining new solutions.
You’ll work closely with leadership and cross-functional teams, with significant autonomy to shape strategy and execution.
This opportunity is ideal for an accounting leader who is equally energized by emerging technology, process improvement, and building what comes next.

Accountabilities
  • Lead accounting engagements for a focused client portfolio, including monthly financial statements, budget-versus-actual analysis, forecasting, financial modeling, cash management, and accounting operations.
  • Oversee accounts receivable and accounts payable activities, including invoicing, collections, contract review, payment processing, and policy compliance.
  • Support payroll, employee onboarding and offboarding, tax compliance, accounting policies, and other core finance processes.
  • Serve as the primary owner for AI implementation and workflow automation initiatives, from identifying opportunities through deployment, adoption, and optimization.
  • Lead cross-functional discovery sessions to identify operational pain points, prioritize AI use cases, define project scope, and establish measurable outcomes.
  • Design AI-powered knowledge systems, including searchable internal resources, structured prompt libraries, templates, and workflow tools supporting accounting, finance, and client-service activities.
  • Identify high-friction processes suitable for AI augmentation and develop repeatable workflows for areas such as onboarding, close support, reconciliation review, and technical research.
  • Establish quality assurance, validation, governance, security, confidentiality, and compliance standards for AI-generated outputs and automated workflows.
  • Use client engagements as pilot environments to test AI-enabled solutions, measure efficiency and quality improvements, and identify opportunities for scalable client-facing services.
  • Partner with leadership and commercial teams to evaluate the feasibility, scope, packaging, pricing, and positioning of potential AI-enabled services.
  • Develop implementation playbooks, SOPs, training materials, prompt libraries, governance frameworks, and troubleshooting documentation to support broader adoption.
  • Establish performance metrics and reporting for AI initiatives, tracking efficiency gains, response times, error reduction, adoption, ROI, and overall business impact.
  • Provide regular updates to leadership and continuously improve technology-enabled processes based on usage data, experimentation, and stakeholder feedback.
  • Mentor and develop accounting team members while contributing to a collaborative, high-performance professional services environment.
Requirements
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 2 years in a supervisory or leadership capacity.
  • 5+ years of experience across accounting, finance operations, consulting, systems implementation, or related functions, with experience in technology or professional services environments.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance preferred; CPA certification is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, accounting operations, and modern finance technology stacks.
  • Advanced Excel skills and hands-on experience with accounting and finance platforms such as QuickBooks Online, Xero, NetSuite, Campfire, Brex, Ramp, Rippling, Gusto, Rillet, or Puzzle.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate AI and automation capabilities into practical, business-focused workflow applications.
  • Experience leading technology, systems, workflow automation, or AI-enabled implementations from discovery through deployment.
  • Familiarity with generative AI tools and automation platforms, with the judgment to validate outputs and manage associated risks.
  • Strong quality-control, data-validation, documentation, and process-design capabilities.
  • Ability to create scalable SOPs, implementation frameworks, training resources, and operational standards from experimentation and lessons learned.
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in an evolving environment.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and independent decision-making abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Comfortable serving as a strategic and technical leader across internal initiatives and client-facing engagements.
  • Professional integrity, high energy, adaptability, and a strong commitment to client service.
  • Strong relationship-building and collaboration skills across clients, leadership, peers, and cross-functional teams.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset and enthusiasm for startups, emerging technology, continuous improvement, and innovation.
  • Fully remote availability with willingness to travel approximately 2–3 weeks per year for company events and attend in-person onboarding training within the first three months.
Benefits
  • Salary: $145,000–$185,000, based on experience.
  • Bonus: 10% target bonus opportunity.
  • Fully remote position with flexibility and work-from-home support.
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance, with 100% employee coverage on the base plan and 70% coverage for additional family members.
  • Flexible Spending Account (FSA) options.
  • 401(k) participation.
  • Three weeks of paid time off.
  • Voluntary life insurance and disability plans.
  • Work-from-home allowance.
  • Flexible scheduling and reduced-hours arrangements may be available for primary caregivers and others requiring additional flexibility, with benefits potentially prorated.
  • Approximately 2–3 weeks of annual travel for all-staff retreats and regional meetups.
  • In-person onboarding and training during the first three months.
  • Ongoing mentorship, professional development, and exposure to innovative AI and accounting technologies.
  • Opportunity to directly influence firm-wide technology strategy and build scalable solutions from the ground up.
