POLICE CHIEF
We are seeking a progressive, experienced, and community-focused law enforcement professional to serve as our next Chief of Police. The Chief will lead a full-service department composed of 41 sworn officers and 11 civilian employees, and will oversee all aspects of police operations, including patrol, investigations, animal control, administration, community policing, and public safety initiatives.
This position requires a strategic and ethical leader who values transparency, innovation, collaboration, and community trust.
This job/class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.Work Schedule:
Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30pm; some night meetings required
All new employees must satisfactorily complete a background check. A conditional offer of employment may then be made contingent upon the successful completion of a drug test.
This is an Exempt Position.
Creates and administers the departmental budget; monitors and controls expenses; reviews and approves grants.
Supervises, mentors and directs subordinate employees engaged in administrative, operational, and technical operations for the Police Department.
Makes sure employee wellness is a priority for the department.
Confers with the Town Manager, Town Administrators/Departmental Heads, and other critical personnel as needed to resolve problems/complaints and/or clarify policy, procedures, and regulations.
Attends meetings/departmental activities as required; cooperates with other law enforcement officials/agencies as needed; coordinates the mutual aide of law enforcement operations with state/federal/local agencies.
Receives and resolves complaints; cultivates favorable public relations.
Counsels employees on improvement of police operations and the apprehension/detention of wanted persons.
Notifies Town Council of critical incidents / events.
Regularly interacts with community members and groups, attends community meetings and functions.
Serves as the Town’s Emergency Manager.
Primary Back-up to the Town Manager.
Additional Duties:
Provides credible testimony when required to for legal cases.
Directs the preparation of recurring and special reports on departmental operations and activities.
Performs related work as assigned or required.
Meets with the Town Attorney to monitor officer case preparation and court testimony.
Maintains an active presence regionally to make sure the Town of Vienna is properly represented.
Preferred qualification is a master’s degree or completion of a national executive leadership program such as the FBI National Academy.
Requires ten years’ prior experience as an upper level manager with departmental authority, i.e., Chief, Deputy Chief, Major, or closely related experience.
