Job Description
The Corporation of Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall is seeking a Building Operator to join our dedicated Building Operations team. Reporting to the Building Operations Manager, this role is responsible for the operation and maintenance of our venues’ building systems—ensuring a comfortable, safe, and clean environment for employees, artists, and patrons.
The Building Operations team is on-site at both Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall seven days a week, supporting both event and non-event days. Successful candidates must be able to work on-site at both venues. Due to the nature of our business, evening, weekend, and holiday work is required.
Key ResponsibilitiesOperate and maintain HVAC, BAS, electrical, plumbing, and vertical transportation systems.
Conduct regular walkthroughs and inspections of all interior and exterior areas (including roof, attics, and parking garages).
Monitor the work order system, radio, and phone; respond to requests such as fixing equipment, plumbing issues, adjusting temperatures, changing lights/ballasts, or updating signage and marketing materials.
Respond to building and mechanical failures and escalate issues as appropriate.
Support event preparation including movement of furniture, merchandise, and products.
Perform preventive maintenance programs and building/equipment inspections.
Ensure fire and life safety systems are maintained and fully operational.
Operate and adjust Building Automation Systems (BAS) as needed.
Assist with building repairs including finishes, drywall, paint, and auditorium fixtures.
Participate in groundskeeping activities such as gardening, snow/ice removal, and reflective pool maintenance.
Keep maintenance and mechanical areas clean and organized.
Maintain awareness of emergency preparedness and fire safety procedures.
Oversee and assist third-party contractors, ensuring compliance with all safety and operational guidelines.
Participate in training such as first aid, fall arrest, WHMIS, and fire drills.
Building Environmental Systems Certificate or minimum two years of experience in a building operations role (experience in event, theatre, or attraction settings preferred).
Comfortable working in a live performance and theatre environment.
Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Strong communication, multi-tasking, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Willingness to work a varied schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and occasional overnights.
Knowledge of Building Automation Systems, preferably Honeywell and Siemens.
This role is on-site at both Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall.
Work includes shift coverage seven days a week, with schedules that may vary depending on event activity.
Requires both indoor and outdoor work, sometimes in noisy or varying temperature environments.
Involves physical activity, such as walking, climbing, lifting, and carrying equipment.
May require working at heights or in confined spaces, adhering to all safety protocols.
Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is mandatory when required.
Must be available to respond to urgent building or system issues outside regular hours.
