Job Summary

The Design Engineer II – Electrical is responsible for leading the engineering design and analysis of electrical building systems for multi-family new construction projects across California. This role requires a solid foundation in electrical systems design, intermediate-to-advanced technical experience, and the ability to work both independently and as a collaborative member of an integrated project team.

The Design Engineer II serves as a key contributor to construction document development, engineering calculations, BIM coordination, and code-compliant design delivery — with a growing emphasis on sustainable and energy-efficient solutions aligned with California's Title 24 and green building standards.

Key Responsibilities

Design & Engineering

  • Lead electrical system design from concept through construction documents for multi-family residential projects, including power distribution, lighting, low-voltage systems, and service/feeder design.
  • Perform engineering calculations including electrical load analysis, short-circuit analysis, voltage drop, fault current, panel scheduling, and lighting calculations.
  • Prepare and review technical drawings, one-line diagrams, panel schedules, lighting layouts, and specifications using AutoCAD and Revit MEP.
  • Apply and interpret relevant codes and standards including NEC, NFPA 72, NFPA 101, California Electrical Code (CEC), Title 24 Part 6 (Energy), ADA, and applicable local building codes.
  • Design systems with energy efficiency and sustainability in mind, supporting LEED, CALGreen, and Title 24 compliance requirements.
  • Evaluate and select electrical equipment including transformers, switchgear, panelboards, generators, and lighting fixtures.

BIM & Digital Delivery

  • Develop and coordinate Revit MEP models in compliance with project BIM Execution Plans (BEPs) and company BIM standards.
  • Participate in model coordination and clash detection workflows using Navisworks and BIM 360 / Autodesk Construction Cloud.
  • Contribute to the advancement of the firm's BIM standards, families, templates, and digital delivery processes.

Project Coordination

  • Serve as the primary electrical design contact for assigned projects, coordinating directly with project managers, clients, general contractors, and other engineering disciplines.
  • Participate in design, coordination, and OAC meetings to resolve technical issues and preserve design intent throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Support construction administration activities including reviewing submittals and shop drawings, responding to RFIs, and conducting field observations.

Quality & Mentorship

  • Conduct thorough QA/QC reviews of drawings and documents produced by Design Engineer I staff and Design Technicians.
  • Provide technical guidance, peer review, and mentorship to junior team members to support their professional development.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of company design standards, calculation templates, Revit workflows, and documentation processes.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Architectural Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • 3–6 years of relevant experience in electrical building systems design, with multi-family or mixed-use residential projects strongly preferred.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification required; active pursuit of Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.

Skills & Competencies

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit MEP required.
  • Experience with Navisworks, Bluebeam Revu, and BIM 360 / Autodesk Construction Cloud preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of the NEC, California Electrical Code, and Title 24 Part 6 energy compliance requirements.
  • Familiarity with LEED or CALGreen documentation and sustainability design principles.
  • Ability to perform and critically review engineering calculations with accuracy and sound engineering judgment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; comfortable presenting to clients and cross-disciplinary project teams.
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines concurrently.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook); experience with calculation software such as AGi32, SKM, or equivalent is a plus.

Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the U.S. on a full-time basis. AMPAM does not provide employment sponsorship.
