JOB PURPOSE

The Research Economist supports regional economic development and competitiveness initiatives through applied economic analysis, data-driven research, and clear communication of findings. This role analyzes a broad range of economic conditions, including labor markets, industry dynamics, demographics, regional growth trends, and economic impacts, to inform strategy, policy discussions, and stakeholder decision-making.

The Research Economist contributes to local area economic and demographic reporting, economic impact studies, industry and cluster analyses, and regional benchmarking efforts, and prepares deliverables, including memoranda, reports, and presentations for business, civic, and public-sector audiences. The role requires strong analytical skills, experience working with large datasets, and the ability to translate complex economic information into clear, actionable insights for non-technical audiences. The role also involves deep research and substantial report writing, making strong research and written communication skills essential.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Economic & Regional Analysis

  • Analyze macroeconomic, regional, and industry-level data to assess economic conditionsandtrends.
  • Conduct labor market, demographic, industry, and business climate analyses to support regional economic development strategies.

Economic Impact & Modeling

  • Support and conduct economic impactanalysesrelated to major projects, industries, infrastructure investments, events, and policy initiatives using established methodologies and modeling tools.
  • Assistwith input-output modeling, assumptiondevelopment, and interpretation of economic impact results.
  • Prepare clear summariesand thorough reportsof economic impact findings for stakeholders and decision-makers.

Data Management & Research

  • Locate, collect, clean, and manage data from federal, state, regional, and local sources (e.g., BLS, BEA, Census,CDLE).
  • Maintain and update internal datasets and analytical tools to support recurring and ad hoc research needs.
  • Identifyand manipulate databases toallowefficient data extraction, analysis, and reporting.

Reporting & Communication

  • Research and write a variety of economic reports, briefs, and presentations for business, public-sector, and community audiences.
  • Translate complex economic and statistical findings into concise, accessiblenarrativesand visualizations.
  • Contribute torecurring economic reports as well as original, project-based research.

Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Collaborate with internal team members on multidisciplinary research projects spanning labor, industry,policy,housing, and regional growth.
  • Support engagement with workforce agencies, economic development partners, and other regional stakeholders as needed.
  • Assistsenior economists with project execution, data analysis, and presentation preparation.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in Economicsor a related field, plus2-4years of relevant applied research experience, orBachelor’s degree in Economicswith 3-5years of experienceworking with economic, labor, demographic, or industry data and interpreting results for applied, real-world use.
  • Familiarity with economic impact analysis concepts and methodologies (input-output modeling, multipliers, direct/indirect/induced effects).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, withdemonstratedability to present complex economic findings clearly and concisely.
  • Strong attention to detail and data organization skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Proficiencyin Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with economic data platforms (e.g., BLS, BEA, Census,Lightcast, IMPLAN/REMI) preferred.
  • Familiaritywith statistical software such as Stata, R, Python, or similar.
