About This Position
Position Summary
The Auto Body Estimator is responsible for accurately assessing vehicle damage, preparing repair estimates, and managing the repair process from intake to delivery. This role serves as the primary point of contact for customers and insurance companies, ensuring repairs are completed efficiently, profitably, and to quality standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Vehicle Damage Assessment
- Inspect vehicles to determine the extent of collision and cosmetic damage
- Identify structural, mechanical, and cosmetic repair needs
- Document damage using photos, notes, and repair procedures
Estimating & Documentation
- Prepare accurate repair estimates using estimating software (CCC, Mitchell, Audatex, or similar)
- Research OEM repair procedures and manufacturer guidelines
- Write supplements as additional damage is discovered during repairs
- Ensure estimates meet insurance and shop profitability standards
Customer Service
- Communicate clearly with customers regarding repair process, timelines, and expectations
- Explain estimates and insurance procedures in a professional manner
- Provide regular updates to customers throughout the repair process
- Ensure customer satisfaction from drop-off to vehicle delivery
Insurance Coordination
- Work directly with insurance adjusters to negotiate and finalize repair approvals
- Submit estimates, supplements, and documentation in a timely manner
- Ensure compliance with insurance requirements while protecting shop interests
Production Coordination
- Communicate with production manager and technicians regarding repair plans
- Ensure parts are ordered correctly and on time
- Monitor repair progress to prevent delays and bottlenecks
- Assist in maintaining repair cycle time goals
Quality Control & Delivery
- Review completed repairs to ensure accuracy and quality
- Confirm all repairs match the approved estimate
- Conduct final walk-through with customers at delivery
Required Qualifications
- Prior experience as an auto body estimator or damage appraiser preferred
- Knowledge of collision repair processes and materials
- Familiarity with estimating software (CCC, Mitchell, Audatex, etc.)
- Strong communication and customer service skills
- Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
- Basic computer and documentation skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Insurance Direct Repair Program (DRP) experience
- OEM certification knowledge
- I-CAR training or certification
- Prior body shop or production management experience
Physical & Work Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, and inspect vehicles throughout the day
- Ability to work in a shop environment around vehicles and equipment
- Occasional lifting of parts or materials (up to 50 lbs)
