About This Position
Statement of Purpose:
This position assesses all aspects of patient financial account management for all patient visits and is accountable for coordinating all activities necessary to financially secure payment. Involves in-depth communications, collaboration and follow-up with patients, families, third party payers, governmental agencies, employers, and case management to secure potential benefits, including financial assistance. In addition, is responsible for monitoring performance on assigned tasks. Position is self-directed and must make complex decisions independently.
Essential Functions:
- Assists patients with Financial Subsidy Application; monitors Financial Subsidy Applications for potential Medicaid eligibility, refers to PFC II as appropriate.
- Creates a professional and effective customer oriented environment by utilizing excellent communication skills to obtain: pertinent demographic information, confirm insurance information, discuss financial obligation, verify patient agreement signature on file.
- Documents demographic and insurance information in a timely, accurate manner in the hospital computer system following department and hospital standards.
- Consults with Supervisor to develop, coordinate, and implement plans to successfully resolve barriers.
- Accurately works Self Pay work queues.
- Identifies and confirms self-pay patients and works with patient to develop a plan of action for possible Medicaid application and/or Financial Assistance.
6. Notifies and monitors parents for completion of paperwork when babies are not on the policy.
7. Counsels, guides, advises and provides outreach services to patients requiring public benefits, including, Medicaid, Child Health Plus, NYS Marketplace Exchange or other public entitlements, and/or financial assistance.
8. Provides outreach services to patients through face-to-face interaction, telephone contact and/or home visitation for patients requiring assistance with benefit application. Able to apply for benefits via computer system and/or paper application. May accompany or represent the patient at eligibility interviews, case conferences or fair hearings.
9. Identifies barriers to securing public benefits which may impact hospital reimbursement and timely discharge.
10. Utilizes the Medicaid Financial Case Management Database.
EDUCATION: High School Graduation or equivalency required. Two or four-year college degree preferred. Patient Financial Consultant II-CAC (Certified Application Counselor) credentials required within 1 month of hire. **
EXPERIENCE: Minimum three years revenue cycle experience in healthcare institution with demonstrated strong organizational and customer service skills and ability to successfully communicate in verbal, written, email, and telephone interactions. Ability to work independently in an interdisciplinary team environment. Requires ability to input and retrieve data via Meditech information system. Must provide and maintain a valid NYS Class 5 driver’s license. Provider insurance credentialing experience preferred.
