About This Position

PURPOSE OF POSITION

  • The Structural Heart Disease (SHD) & Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Coordinator serve both the Structural Heart Disease and Advanced Heart Failure Service lines. The successful candidate will work in concert with a dedicated team of physicians, nurses, technicians, and administrators ensuring optimal care and efficiency for patients with cardiovascular disease. The Coordinator will support program development and strategic initiatives for both service lines.
  • The Mechanical Support Device & ECMO role will be responsible for performing day to day coordination and operational oversight of the Advanced Heart Failure/Shock program, conducting training, orienting, mentoring staff, measuring competencies and data collection.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Associate’s degree in nursing required. BSN preferred or willingness to pursue BSN.
  • Minimum 3 years prior acute care nursing experience. Prior cardiovascular nursing care experience preferred.
  • Maintain AHA BLS & ACLS Certifications
  • Certification in specialty required within one year of meeting eligibility requirements
  • Experience with project development and implementation
  • Skilled in the use of quality improvement concepts and tools
  • Excellent professional communication skills
  • Strong ability to problem solve and multitask
  • Ability to complete tasks independently with minimal or intermittent direction
  • Proactively deal with continual change
  • Track record of building positive relationships and effective collaboration with other disciplines/departments

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety manuals, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.

RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS

  • Provide follow-up to all departments, staff and physicians for performance improvement

  • Communicates with peers on a daily basis regarding service delivery and issues that need to be resolved.

  • Management of assigned projects daily including initiation, follow-through and completion of the project

  • Demonstrates lifelong learning through a knowledge and understanding of best practice and evidence-based guidelines for cardiovascular disease management
  • The job will require schedule flexibility regarding shift start and end times.
  • Structural Heart Disease:

  • Expected roles include direct patient contact and coordination of care as well as the coordination of weekly meetings and presentations.
  • Specific responsibilities will include scheduling outpatient evaluations and follow-ups, implantation scheduling, maintaining the valve database, and overseeing documentation (creation of order sets, etc.) of the patient experience.
  • Initiate and coordinate outreach functions
  • Actively participates in the Transcatheter Valve Therapy (TVT) and Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion (LAAO) Registries to assure data integrity
  • Actively participates in research projects that arise from the Valve Center
  • Develops and implements protocols for care of Structural Heart Disease patients which are evidence based
  • Demonstrates use of evidence applied to clinical practice to achieve improved outcomes
  • Participates in performance improvement/research activities designed to improve patient care, and/or organizational processes
  • Lead monthly Structural Heart Disease case conferences
  • Coordinate and lead Structural Heart Disease education conferences for medical and nursing staff as requested.
  • Chair monthly Structural Heart Disease Committee meetings
  • Advanced Heart Failure:

  • Develops ECMO related policies, procedures protocols and guidelines in conjunction with an ECMO physician.
  • Assumes responsibility with other members of the ECMO administrative team to coordinate in-house and on-call schedules.
  • Serves as the immediate expert or has the ability to consult experts when it comes to the awareness of potential emergencies and prevention of complications and immediate resolution of such
  • Coordinates lectures, simulation and wet lab trainings routinely to ensure clinicians maintain competency.
  • Participates in identifying learning needs and designing, planning, implementing and effectively incorporating appropriate learning techniques when teaching the educational ECMO program to clinicians which will ensure clinical competency.
  • Assist the physician, perfusionist and/or other clinical staff members with initiation of ECMO, the course and conduct of ECMO, and the conclusion of ECMO and any related therapies therein including but not limited to circuit or component changes, priming, blood bank communications, medication administration as licensure permits, and hemofiltration as examples.
  • Maintains regular effective communication with physicians, hospital and clinical staff, direct supervisors and back-up personnel and/or others as directed, in performing job duties, responsibilities and requirements when problems develop with equipment and/or personnel as established within ADHVH protocols and policies.
  • Provides a detailed examination of the circuit to ensure its integrity, while written parameters and a plan of care are worked out during rounds.
  • Assesses blood gas values, anticoagulation parameters and other laboratory values and work within a prescribed set of parameters and guidelines to maintain the patient in an optimal state of well-being.
  • Monitors anticoagulation, analgesics, inotropes and other infusions are titrated, blood products are given, and the ECMO pump flow and oxygenator gas flow adjusted as ordered by the provider managing the case.
  • Assists in data collection for the ELSO database, quality improvement initiatives and research activities related to ECMO.
  • Possesses familiarity of ELSO guidelines and protocols.
  • Collaborates with other ECMO centers and attends ECMO meetings to keep appraised on ECMO management and new technology.
  • Consistently manages adherence to ADHVH’s clinical quality standards and protocols and all Joint Commission requirements, and other applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Monitors and communicates when inventory and equipment need to be ordered to ensure no shortages occur.
  • Performs ECMO clinical coverage and actively participates in the call schedule.
  • Facilitates Cardiogenic Shock Steering committee meetings.
  • Organizes Cardiogenic Shock patient case reviews.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    • Salary. Monday-Friday. Occasional weekends and off-shifts.
