Position Summary:

The Shop Support Technician plays a vital role in supporting the daily operations of a railroad upfitting shop. This position is responsible for transporting upfitted vehicles to various local subcontractor shops for aftermarket procedures, maintaining the cleanliness and upkeep of the facility and grounds, and assisting with the organization and movement of chassis. This role ensures an efficient and orderly work environment, supporting the overall production workflow.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Transportation and Delivery:
    • Safely drive upfitted units (trucks, rail-bound equipment, etc.) to local subcontractor facilities for additional services.
    • Maintain accurate delivery logs and communicate any delays or issues with the Shop Foreman.
    • Conduct basic pre- and post-trip inspections to ensure vehicle safety and condition.
  • Facility and Grounds Maintenance:
    • Perform general cleaning and upkeep of shop floors, common areas, breakrooms, and restrooms.
    • Conduct routine maintenance tasks including trash removal, minor repairs, and groundskeeping duties (e.g., weed spraying, debris clearing).
    • Monitor and report facility maintenance needs to management.
  • Chassis Organization and Yard Management:
    • Assist with organizing incoming and outgoing chassis and units in the yard for easy accessibility and tracking.
    • Coordinate with shop staff to ensure the proper staging of units for upfitting or transport.
    • Use forklifts or other equipment as needed (certification may be required).
  • Support Duties:
    • Assist the Shop Foreman and technicians with parts delivery, tool organization, and workflow coordination.
    • Communicate effectively with team members to ensure smooth daily operations.
    • Follow all company safety policies and procedures.

Qualifications:

  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record (CDL preferred but not required).
  • Previous experience in a shop, yard, or transportation support role preferred.
  • Ability to operate forklifts or other yard equipment (or willingness to become certified).
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Strong work ethic and reliability.

Work Environment:

This position requires working both indoors in a shop environment and outdoors in a yard or delivery setting. The employee may be exposed to loud noise, moving mechanical parts, and varying weather conditions.
