Automotive Mechanic at Kent County – Grand Rapids, Michigan

Kent County Fleet Services is seeking a Full-Time Automotive Mechanic to join our team. This position is part of a team that performs preventative maintenance and repairs on a wide range of vehicles, including automotive equipment, light trucks, and emergency vehicles. Our technicians can expect to perform a majority of their work in a safe, clean, and new state-of-the-art shop. This position is provided with the necessary uniforms, tools, and equipment to be successful in this role.

Work schedule is Monday-Friday, 6 AM to 2:30 PM.

A successful candidate should have experience with:

• Mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems
• Standard vehicle repair and maintenance practices
• Diagnostic tools and common computer applications used in vehicle maintenance and repair
• Reading, interpreting, and applying:
  • Electrical schematics
  • Mechanical drawings
  • Manufacturer's operating and maintenance manuals
  • Safety rules, regulations, and work requirements

Essential Duties include:

• Performing inspections, maintenance, and repairs on County vehicles and equipment
• Installing, servicing, and repairing aftermarket police equipment such as:
  • Mobile radios
  • Emergency and warning lighting
  • Sirens and consoles
  • Video and body camera systems
  • Modem devices
  • Mobile laptop/tablet computer terminals

A high school diploma or GED, combined with two years of experience repairing and maintaining vehicles. Post-secondary technical or apprenticeship training is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered.

Must be able to work in a standing position for the entire length of the shift and be physically able to lift vehicle parts in excess of 60 pounds.
