About This Position
Salary Range: $28.96 per hour, with advancement to $29.43 at 1 year (shift premium in addition to hourly rate)
Standard Work Hours: 3rd Shift- 9:00p-7:00a (Four 10-hour shifts)
Metro is looking for a full-time Mechanic to perform journey-level diagnostic repair and maintenance work on its fleet of vehicles and heavy equipment. ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Inspect, diagnose and repair mechanical defects in diesel and gasoline powered buses and vehicles, including engines, transmissions, electrical, hydraulic, and heating/air conditioning systems
- Perform scheduled routine maintenance and repairs of heavy and light equipment including buses, vehicles, shop equipment and snow removal equipment
- Inspects, troubleshoots, and performs diagnostic analysis of all vehicles and equipment consistent with the preventative maintenance program
- Diagnose and dismantle, if necessary, to determine need for overhauls on engines and transmissions, generators or alternators
- Inspect and repair GPS and camera systems
- Inspect and repair fare collection equipment
- Complete records of work performed, parts used and time worked
- Keep accurate records of all maintenance, repairs, and parts used for each piece of equipment and keep Supervisor informed of inventory levels and parts needs
- Road test vehicles to assist in making diagnosis and to check completed work
- Provide emergency road service to disabled vehicles
- Assists with the coordination of vehicle repair downtime to ensure operations are not compromised
- Keeps work area and shop clean, functional, in safe working condition, and secures all tool and parts storage areas during non-working hours
- Adheres to and implements all safety rules, regulations and practices including wearing appropriate safety equipment
- Read and understand written and electronic manuals, reports and directives, search databases
- Assists with the winter snow and ice control operations as required or necessary
- Assist with minor building and grounds maintenance as required or necessary
- Assist with cleaning maintenance for the buildings and vehicles as required or necessary
- Performs other maintenance tasks and assists departments, as may be obvious, apparent or assigned, to accommodate the efficient operation of Metro
The position will function under the general supervision of the Deputy Director of Fleet and Facility and/or Senior Transit Maintenance Supervisor and under the direct supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor(s).
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Automotive knowledge
- Stable work history
- History of good attendance and punctuality
- Minimum age of 18
- Minimum 2 years of driving history
- Oral and written communication skills
- Interpersonal and customer relations skills
Ability to:
- Learn and apply preventative maintenance techniques
- Learn and apply tools, equipment, and procedures used in the diagnosis and repair of equipment and vehicles
- Obtain and maintain a Class B Permit/License with endorsements
- Be flexible in handling changes
- Understand and follow written and oral instructions
- Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with other employees and the public
- Be flexible to work varied shifts including days, nights, split shifts, and weekends
- Exercise sound judgement in stressful situations within scope of responsibilities
Your established driving history must be clear of the following:
- Any suspensions within the past 36 months
- Any six-point violations within the past 24 months
- Any OWI convictions within the past 24 months

WORK CONDITIONS
Normal working conditions for this position are working with regular exposure to odors or fumes, working on slippery or uneven surfaces, exposure to moving machinery and/or vehicles, exposure to outdoor weather including extreme heat, cold, dampness and/or humidity, extensive safety training, work irregular hours, split shifts, weekend and work after designated regular hours in case of special assignments or emergencies.

Ability to perform work in a standing position 60% of the time, with walking estimated at 35% of the shift. Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds without assistance on a routine basis and up to 75 pounds on an intermittent basis. Ability to climb, balance, kneel, reach, bend, twist, and fine dexterity is required.
