Job Description

The Advanced endoscopy team APN will provide comprehensive care to patients undergoing advanced interventional endoscopic procedures. They will serve as a key member of the advanced endoscopy team, ensuring seamless coordination of patient care before, during, and after complex endoscopic interventions such as ERCP, EUS, EMR, ESD, POEM, and endobariatric therapies.

The APN will primarily see patients at RWJUH and RWJBH outpatient and procedural facilities, with occasional responsibilities in inpatient and multidisciplinary care settings. Close collaboration with advanced endoscopists, the gastroenterology division, and referring providers is essential to ensure high-quality, patient-centered care.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing with a minimum of a master's degree (RN License)
  • Certified as a Nurse Practitioner with prescriptive authority in the State of New Jersey (NP Certification, DEA, and CDS)
  • APN License
  • At least one year of nursing experience
  • Willingness to participate in divisional clinical and educational duties, including lectures, journal clubs, and the teaching of residents and students,
  • Experience in the field of GI, as well as at least one year of experience with electronic medical records, is preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office is also desirable, along with excellent organizational and interpersonal skills

Schedule

  • M-F 9a-5
  • This role requires potential coverage for inpatient rounding

Essential Functions

  • Patient Evaluation & Assessment
    • Perform detailed health evaluations, medical history review, and physical examinations for patients referred for advanced endoscopic procedures.
    • Order and interpret diagnostic studies, labs, and imaging relevant to advanced endoscopy indications and peri-procedural risk assessment.
    • Identify comorbidities and optimize patients for endoscopic interventions in collaboration with supervising physicians.
  • Peri-Procedural & Post-Procedural Management
    • Provide patient education regarding advanced endoscopic procedures, expected outcomes, risks, and aftercare.
    • Participate in immediate and longitudinal post-procedure care, including monitoring for complications, coordinating follow-up testing, and ensuring timely communication with patients and referring providers.
    • Adjust medical management as appropriate under established protocols, including antibiotics, anticoagulation, and pain control.
  • Care Coordination
    • Serve as a liaison between patients, gastroenterologists, surgeons, oncologists, and other collaborating specialists.
    • Coordinate diagnostic workup, procedural scheduling, and follow-up care to optimize patient outcomes.
    • Provide ongoing support between visits, including interpreting test results, addressing clinical concerns, and arranging referrals as necessary.
  • Education & Research Support
    • Contribute to patient and family education regarding disease processes, procedural options, and long-term management strategies.
    • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and clinical research within the Advanced Endoscopy Program.
    • Collaborate with fellows, residents, and nursing staff to support ongoing education in advanced endoscopic practice.
