Group Fitness Instructor

Job Summary

The Group Exercise Instructor will establish and lead innovative classes based upon the latest in scientific research and current industry standards. The Group Exercise Instructor assists in carrying out responsibilities as directed and ensures harmonious rapport between members and employees.

Physical Requirements

Working Conditions

Primarily Works in a well-lighted and air-conditioned environment with period of heavy workload and stress. This role may include working in less-than-ideal home conditions, which can include exposure to extreme temperatures and environments that may not meet typical cleanliness standards such as clutter, unkept surfaces, and homes with pets. Works in various conditions.

Performance: Essential Functions

Decision Making: Ability to make decisions and takes appropriate action based on the information they have. Recognizes own limitations and consults with the supervisor, manager, or team member when appropriate.

Time Management: Works efficiently and manages duties to ensure that tasks are completed with accuracy and within the scheduled shift or reasonable amount of time.

Quality & Quantity: Demonstrates accurate, knowledge and skill to carry out job duties. Follows departmental work policies and procedures. Speed and consistency of output, and time utilization of job duties.

Computer Knowledge & Electronic Equipment Use: Demonstrates ability to consistently utilize electronic equipment and online computer programs to perform job duties, including electronic documentation, and order entry.

Resource Utilization: Consistently utilizes and maintains supplies and equipment to minimize lost charges and unnecessary equipment repair-replacement.

Confidentiality: Adheres to established policies on privacy and security requirements for compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), as applicable by Shannon Policy.

Performance: Position Specific Essential Functions

  • Responsible to start and finish exercise classes according to scheduled times. Allows five minutes before class to ensure music and equipment is ready.
  • Obtains information from class participants who are new, have special needs and/or physical limitations prior to beginning class.
  • Provides a safe exercise class with a variety of movement. Demonstrates various exercise intensity levels and correct exercise alignment.
  • Utilizes proper cueing while instructing class, cues proper alignment/posture to maximize functional strength and encourages participants to verbalize their perceived exertion or heart rate, if appropriate during class.
  • Maintains an upbeat, vivacious attitude while instructing and provides class participants with positive feedback when appropriate.
  • Locates suitable sub-instructor when unable to teach and informs supervisor.
  • Provides quality service to membership by being courteous, polite and available for questions or suggestions to participants; projects a positive attitude toward members.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • Makes proper preparations prior to class to ensure a well organized class. When teaching pre-choreographed formats (i.e. BodyPUMP®, BodyFLOW®) has solid knowledge of choreography.
  • Ensures proper selection of music, volume level, and beats/min. according to type of exercise, class population and ACSM guidelines.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills appropriate to members of all ages utilizing the Health Club.
  • Performs duties with little or no supervision.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills needed to perform duties during an emergency. Knows how to report incidents relating to member safety and knows where emergency equipment and AED is located.
  • Maintains a safe environment during class.
  • Completes assigned tasks on time.
  • Organizes/prioritizes time to account for workload, priority setting, meetings, and/or emergencies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

  • Required
    • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent

Experience:

  • Preferred
    • One year of experience as an Aerobic/Yoga class Instructor

Certification/Licensure:

  • Required
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
      • Must obtain within six (6) weeks of start date
    • Personal Training Certification
      • Must obtain within eight (8) weeks of start date
      • Personal Training Certification accepted through one of the following organizations: ACSM, ACE, AFAA, or NSCA, NASM, NPTA, ISSA, NESTA, SCW, or any organization that offers an accredited personal training certification
