Director of Engineering Trust & Safety

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Director of Engineering — Trust & Safety based in Brazil.

In this role, you will lead the engineering organization responsible for safeguarding user accounts, financial integrity, and regulatory compliance across multiple Latin American markets. You will own the systems that ensure identity verification, account protection, fraud detection, and compliance reporting operate with the highest levels of reliability and trust. This is a high-impact leadership position where engineering decisions directly affect customer access to funds, platform security, and regulatory standing. You will manage multiple engineering managers and their teams, setting a strong technical vision and raising the bar for reliability, security, and execution. The environment is fast-paced, highly regulated, and mission-critical, requiring strong cross-functional collaboration with Product, Compliance, Security, and Risk teams. You will also play a key role in evolving engineering practices toward modern, AI-enabled development approaches. This is a strategic leadership role combining deep technical ownership with organizational impact across countries and teams.

Accountabilities:
  • Own the reliability, availability, and security of identity, access, and account protection systems, ensuring strong SLOs, incident management discipline, and operational excellence.
  • Lead the end-to-end compliance and regulatory reporting systems across multiple jurisdictions, ensuring accuracy, auditability, and timeliness in collaboration with Legal, Risk, and Compliance teams.
  • Drive the fraud detection and prevention roadmap, focusing on reducing account takeovers, improving detection speed, and minimizing friction for legitimate users.
  • Manage, mentor, and scale multiple engineering managers and their teams, setting high standards for hiring, performance, and technical excellence.
  • Define and enforce engineering standards across the fleet, ensuring post-release quality, resilience, and security of all systems.
  • Lead the adoption of AI-native engineering practices to improve development speed, quality, and system design across teams.
  • Partner closely with Product, Security, Fraud, and Compliance leaders to align technical execution with business and regulatory priorities.
  • Operate in a highly cross-functional, multi-country environment, influencing through technical credibility and leadership.
Requirements:
  • Proven experience leading large engineering organizations (20+ engineers across multiple teams and managers) with ownership of mission-critical production systems.
  • Strong background in high-stakes domains such as fintech, payments, banking, crypto, identity, fraud, or security.
  • Track record of building and scaling engineering teams, including hiring, performance management, and talent development.
  • Deep understanding of reliability engineering practices, including SLOs, incident response, and postmortems, with evidence of driving systemic improvements.
  • Experience working in regulated environments where compliance is a core engineering requirement.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and evolve engineering organizations adopting AI-native development practices.
  • Strong cross-functional leadership experience in complex, matrixed, multi-country organizations.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills across technical and non-technical audiences.
  • LATAM market experience and proficiency in Spanish or Portuguese are strong advantages.
