This is a hands-on technical leadership role focused on architecting and delivering complex, full-stack software solutions for demanding client environments.
You will guide multiple engagements from technical discovery and architecture through implementation, deployment, and ongoing support.
The role combines deep engineering expertise with client-facing leadership, requiring you to communicate technical decisions and business tradeoffs with confidence.
You’ll work across frontend, backend, cloud infrastructure, data, DevOps, and connected systems while setting a high bar for engineering quality.
The initial engagement centers on Java and Dropwizard, but the broader environment spans React, TypeScript, Python, AWS, Azure, and modern infrastructure tooling.
You’ll also mentor engineers, strengthen delivery practices, support technical scoping, and help clients build systems that are scalable and maintainable.
This opportunity is designed for an experienced engineer who enjoys solving difficult problems, leading through complexity, and remaining deeply involved in production code.
- Serve as the key technical architect across multiple client engagements, ensuring technology strategies align with customer objectives and measurable business outcomes.
- Lead architecture and technical design across frontend, backend, APIs, cloud infrastructure, event-driven systems, data platforms, and user-facing applications.
- Own technical delivery from discovery and planning through development, testing, deployment, production support, and continuous improvement.
- Write and review production-quality code while establishing strong standards for maintainability, scalability, security, testing, and performance.
- Become productive quickly in existing Java and Dropwizard codebases and contribute directly to the initial client engagement.
- Collaborate across software engineering, hardware, data science, design, product, and client teams to deliver end-to-end connected and intelligent solutions.
- Establish and improve engineering practices around automated testing, CI/CD, source control, code reviews, deployment, monitoring, logging, and observability.
- Design and support cloud-native systems across AWS and Azure, including infrastructure, security, performance, reliability, and operational tooling.
- Identify architectural, technical, and delivery risks early, communicate tradeoffs clearly, and implement practical mitigation strategies.
- Partner with product managers and technical leads to translate client requirements into actionable technical plans and deliverables.
- Support pre-sales activities as a solutions engineering partner by contributing to technical scoping, estimation, solution design, and Statements of Work.
- Mentor and guide engineers through development, code reviews, production troubleshooting, and on-call responsibilities.
- Contribute to recruitment, onboarding, knowledge sharing, and the continued development of engineering talent.
- Represent the technical organization in client meetings and industry engagements as a trusted subject-matter expert.
- Lead concurrent client programs toward successful, on-time delivery while maintaining strong client satisfaction and engineering standards.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
- 10+ years of professional software development experience, including substantial hands-on full-stack engineering experience.
- 3+ years of experience in a technical leadership role overseeing cross-functional engineering teams or complex software initiatives.
- Strong backend development expertise using Java or another modern object-oriented language, with production Java experience preferred.
- Ability to become productive quickly in Java and Dropwizard for the initial engagement, even if your primary background is in another backend ecosystem.
- Strong frontend development experience with React, TypeScript, Vite, and/or Expo.
- Proven experience delivering full-stack systems from concept through production and supporting public-facing applications at scale.
- Deep knowledge of backend frameworks such as Dropwizard, Spring Boot, Django, FastAPI, or comparable production technologies.
- Experience designing and supporting event-driven architectures, APIs, cloud platforms, and distributed systems.
- Strong experience with AWS and Azure, including services such as Lambda, ECS, Fargate, RDS, CloudFront, CloudWatch, SNS, and SQS.
- Experience with relational and non-relational databases and data modeling.
- Highly proficient in CI/CD automation and Infrastructure as Code using tools such as GitHub Actions, Terraform, or Pulumi.
- Strong understanding of security, logging, monitoring, observability, performance, and reliability in cloud-native environments.
- Experience with Docker, automated testing, Git, pull requests, and modern source code management platforms such as GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively within unfamiliar codebases, technologies, frameworks, and client environments.
- Strong client-facing communication and executive presentation skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts and tradeoffs to diverse audiences.
- Professional services or consulting experience is strongly preferred.
- Strong ownership, adaptability, and problem-solving skills, with a focus on client outcomes and long-term technical value.
- Must reside in the United States and be a U.S. citizen.
- Must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
- Must be able to pass a background check.
- A valid, publicly accessible personal LinkedIn profile with a photo is required for this client-facing role.
- Contract compensation of $100 USD per hour, commensurate with experience.
- Fully remote work within the United States.
- Flexible work environment designed for distributed teams.
- Opportunity to work on complex, high-impact software and technology programs across connected products, cloud platforms, AI-driven systems, and data-intensive applications.
- Significant technical ownership and opportunities to influence architecture, engineering standards, and delivery practices.
- Exposure to a modern polyglot technology environment spanning Java, React, TypeScript, Python, AWS, Azure, Docker, Terraform, Pulumi, and CI/CD.
- Opportunities to mentor engineers, contribute to technical leadership, and support client-facing solution development.
- Meaningful work with demanding technical challenges and opportunities for continuous professional growth.
- Contract engagement structured as a 1099 role, with the scope potentially approximating a full-time workload depending on the contractor’s pace and approach.
- Client travel may be required up to approximately 10% of the time, and some engagements may include participation in a 24/7 support rotation.
