Job Description

Use your healthcare, counseling, social work, or crisis-intervention experience to help families understand the opportunity to give the gift of life through organ donation at Infinite Legacy.

As an Organ Family Services Coordinator I (OFSC I) with Infinite Legacy, your primary responsibility is to engage families of potential donors in compassionate, informed conversations about organ and tissue donation and secure authorization for donation when appropriate.

You will combine strong communication, relationship-building, grief and crisis-intervention skills with a thorough understanding of the donation process to help families make informed decisions during emotionally difficult circumstances.

Working alongside hospital physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains, and Infinite Legacy's clinical teams, you will advocate for donation and the potential donor's wishes while ensuring families are treated with compassion, dignity, and respect throughout the authorization process.

What You'll Do

As an Organ Family Services Coordinator, you will lead the family approach and donation authorization process for potential organ donors.

You will:

  • Respond promptly to organ donor referrals and determine the appropriate timing and strategy for approaching families about donation.
  • Lead conversations with families about the opportunity for organ and tissue donation and obtain authorization for donation when appropriate.
  • Advocate for organ and tissue donation, the potential donor's documented or expressed wishes, and the recipients awaiting lifesaving transplantation.
  • Use effective communication, relationship-building, and trauma- and grief-informed techniques when engaging families experiencing sudden loss or end-of-life circumstances.
  • Clearly explain the donation process, answer questions, address concerns, and help families make informed decisions.
  • Complete required authorization and disclosure documentation and medical/social history accurately and within established timeframes.
  • Collaborate with hospital physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains, and other healthcare professionals to develop an effective family-communication and donation-authorization plan.
  • Work closely with Infinite Legacy's clinical and operational teams throughout donor management and organ recovery to communicate family needs and maintain continuity throughout the donation process.
  • Coordinate with Infinite Legacy's Aftercare team to transition donor families to appropriate grief, bereavement, and ongoing support resources following donation.
  • Participate in ongoing education, simulation, case review, and skill development focused on donation authorization, communication, family engagement, and organ donation best practices.

What Makes Someone Successful in This Role

This position requires someone who can establish trust quickly, navigate emotionally complex conversations, and confidently communicate the opportunity for donation.

Professionals with backgrounds in social work, counseling, nursing, hospice, crisis intervention, bereavement services, behavioral health, acute healthcare, or other family-facing healthcare environments may bring highly transferable skills to this work.

Successful Family Services Coordinators are able to balance compassion with purpose. They recognize that families are experiencing extraordinary circumstances while also understanding the importance of advocating for donation, honoring donor wishes, and representing the needs of patients awaiting transplantation.

You do not need previous organ procurement experience. Infinite Legacy provides specialized education, simulation, and training in organ donation, family approach, authorization practices, and the donation process.

Schedule & Work Environment

Organ donation occurs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and Family Services Coordinators must be available when potential donation opportunities occur.

Organ Family Services Coordinators:

  • Work thirteen 12-hour shifts per month.
  • Participate in a rotating schedule that may include days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Participate in required simulation training, case reviews, team meetings, and ongoing professional development.
  • Travel throughout Infinite Legacy's Donor Service Area to hospitals and other locations as needed.
  • Maintain flexibility to respond to emergent donor cases and periods of high donation activity.
  • Maintain reliable internet connectivity capable of supporting required remote technology.

Qualifications

Preferred Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in nursing, social work, psychology, counseling, or another related healthcare field preferred; equivalent relevant clinical or counseling experience may be considered.
  • 1–2 years of experience in an acute healthcare setting preferred, or experience in hospice, crisis intervention, bereavement counseling, or another setting involving death, dying, grief, trauma, and loss.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with individuals and families experiencing crisis.
  • Ability to communicate sensitive and complex information clearly, confidently, and compassionately.
  • Strong cultural awareness and ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and belief systems.
  • Strong accountability, judgment, organization, time management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary healthcare environment.
  • Comfort using technology and electronic databases for documentation and communication.
  • Ability to travel throughout Infinite Legacy's Donor Service Area.

What Success Looks Like

Success in this position includes the ability to consistently and effectively engage families in donation conversations, advocate for organ and tissue donation, and secure authorization when appropriate, while ensuring families receive accurate information and are treated with compassion and respect.

Family Services Coordinators are expected to continually develop their authorization skills through education, simulation, coaching, case review, and performance feedback while contributing to Infinite Legacy's broader donation and transplantation outcomes.
