Supervisor Central Sterile Supply - RWJBarnabas Health

Ensures the continuous and efficient flow of equipment and instrumentation through the Sterile Processing Department (SPD).Effectively plans and manages storage needs while collaborating with Operating Room Service Leaders and nursing personnel to meet procedural demands.

Coordinates SPD activities with nursing and service leaders, fostering strong communication and developing timely, thorough resolutions to operational issues.

A typical day for Supervisor Central Sterile Supply may include:

  • Partners with the Materials Manager to maintain adequate equipment and supply levels and participates in evaluating products and resources to support departmental efficiency,
  • Contributes to the hiring process by providing input during applicant interviews for open positions within the department,
  • Maintains quality standards across all shifts by facilitating staff training, conducting annual competency assessments, and supporting the evaluation process,
  • Actively participates in Quality Improvement initiatives and leads SPD staff activities to consistently achieve departmental goals,
  • Responsible for identifying and reporting safety concerns, including hazardous conditions,
  • Ensures departmental compliance with all applicable hospital policies, regulatory requirements, and accreditation standards,
  • Employees in the Sterile Processing Department are exposed to a wide range of equipment and tools, including steam sterilizers (autoclaves), low-temperature sterilizers such as hydrogen peroxide gas plasma or ethylene oxide, ultrasonic cleaners, sonic irrigators, automated washer-disinfectors, cart washers, heat sealers, and endoscope reprocessing units

  • They also work with operating room power equipment such as drills and saws, suction devices, and a variety of surgical instruments that may be sharp, heavy, or complex in design.

  • High school diploma required,
  • 'Successful completion of a formal Sterile Processing/Certified Sterile (SPD/CS) training course,
  • Must hold current certification as a Sterile Processing Technician through either CBSPD or HSPA, with Certified Healthcare Leader (CHL) certification required within two years of hire,
  • Requires one to two years of experience in sterile processing, with comprehensive knowledge of surgical instruments,
  • Must demonstrate proficiency in the operation and understanding of all sterile processing equipment, including pre-vacuum and gravity sterilizers, washer-decontaminators, ultrasonic cleaners, ultrasonic lumen cleaners, and low-temperature gas plasma sterilizers,
  • Must be knowledgeable of all applicable New Jersey Department of Health regulations and AAMI standards,
