Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Directional Drill Locator to support our underground telecommunications construction projects. This role is responsible for accurately locating drill heads, guiding drill operators, and ensuring safe, precise installation of underground conduit and fiber pathways. The ideal candidate is safety‑focused, detail‑oriented, and experienced with HDD (Horizontal Directional Drilling) operations.
You will work closely with drill operators and construction crews to complete projects efficiently and according to engineering specifications.
Key ResponsibilitiesOperate locating equipment to track and guide the drill head during HDD operations
Communicate bore path information clearly to the drill operator throughout the drilling process
Read and interpret construction plans, bore logs, and utility locates
Identify underground utilities and ensure safe drilling around existing infrastructure
Assist with setting up drill rigs, mixing mud, and preparing job sites
Complete bore logs, as‑built documentation, and daily production reports
Perform potholing/soft digging to verify utility locations when required
Ensure all work complies with safety standards, job specifications, and local regulations
Assist with pulling conduit, installing handholes, and supporting general OSP construction tasks
Maintain tools, locating equipment, and job site organization
1–3 years of experience as a Directional Drill Locator (telecom or utilities preferred)
Strong understanding of HDD operations, bore planning, and underground construction
Proficiency with locating systems (e.g., DigiTrak, Subsite, or similar)
Ability to read and interpret utility maps, construction drawings, and bore profiles
Strong communication skills and ability to work closely with drill operators
Knowledge of underground utility safety practices and state dig laws
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
Valid CDL preferred; ability and willingness to obtain a CDL upon hire required.
Experience with telecom OSP construction, including:
Conduit installation
Handhole placement
Fiber installation support
Familiarity with vacuum excavation equipment
Understanding of soil conditions and drilling fluids
Ability to operate HDD rigs (a plus but not required)
Ability to lift 50+ lbs
Ability to walk long distances and stand for extended periods
Ability to work in trenches, around heavy equipment, and in outdoor environments
