Description:

The Surgical Technologist is an essential member of the surgical team responsible for supporting physicians and ensuring the safe and efficient delivery of surgical care. Working under the supervision and delegation of the surgeon, this role assists in maintaining a safe operating room environment, ensuring proper equipment functionality, and supporting surgical procedures under conditions that maximize patient safety.

The Surgical Technologist applies expertise in sterile technique, surgical instrumentation, anatomy, and procedural workflows to facilitate successful invasive and non-invasive procedures. This position may function in both the first scrub and second scrub role, anticipating surgeon needs, maintaining sterile fields, and assisting throughout the operative process.

Requirements:
  • Prepare the operating room by gathering, checking, and opening supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures.
  • Perform surgical hand scrub and sterile gowning and gloving procedures.
  • Set up sterile fields, back tables, and Mayo stands with instruments, supplies, medications, and solutions.
  • Conduct instrument, sponge, and sharps counts with the circulating nurse.
  • Assist team members with gowning and gloving.
  • Assist with patient draping and establishment of the sterile field.
  • Participate in patient verification, surgical site confirmation, and time-out procedures.
  • Secure sterile tubing, cords, and accessories.
  • Anticipate surgeon needs and prepare additional instrumentation, supplies, and equipment during procedures.
  • Pass instruments and supplies to the surgeon efficiently and accurately.
  • Prepare and pass medications, irrigation fluids, and hemostatic agents as directed.
  • Assist with retractors, suctioning, sponging, and cutting sutures as needed.
  • Support robotic or camera-assisted procedures as directed by the surgeon.
  • Maintain strict sterile technique and continuously monitor the sterile field.
  • Perform additional instrument, sharps, and sponge counts as necessary.
  • Prepare sterile dressings and assist with specimen handling.
  • Clean and prepare instruments for sterilization following procedures.
  • Assist with room turnover and preparation for subsequent procedures.
  • Participate in debriefing and quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care.
  • Review patient charts, verify patient identity, and confirm procedures and consents.
  • Assist with transporting and positioning patients using proper anatomical and safety principles.
  • Monitor patient comfort and provide reassurance before procedures.
  • Assist anesthesia providers as needed.
  • Apply grounding pads, tourniquets, and other procedural equipment.
  • Perform patient skin preparation before draping.
  • Assist with dressing application and patient transfer to recovery as needed.
  • Maintain accurate surgeon preference cards and procedural records.
  • Assist in Sterile Processing with cleaning, assembling, sterilizing, and reprocessing instruments and equipment in accordance with regulatory standards.
  • Support supply and implant inventory management.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program through ARC/STSA preferred.
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential preferred.
  • Candidates with two (2) years of directly related surgical experience may be considered in lieu of certification.
  • Current CPR/BLS certification for Health Care Providers required.
  • One to two years of surgical technology experience preferred, ideally in an ambulatory surgery center (ASC) or orthopedic setting.

  • Strong knowledge of sterile technique, asepsis, and surgical instrumentation.
  • Ability to anticipate surgeon and procedural needs.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to patient safety.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced surgical environment.
  • Read medical records, computer screens, and monitor patient conditions.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, lifting, pushing, and pulling throughout the workday.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds unassisted, including assisting patients when necessary.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to operate surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, and surgical environments.

Position Highlights:

  • Flexible prn schedule- Approximately 1-2 shifts per month available
  • Guaranteed pay for scheduled shifts if coverage is not ultimately needed
  • Must work at least one shift per month to maintain competency in the facility
  • Shift hours 06:00 am -3:00 pm
